Labor

Here is an amusing essay on the labor market from Anthropologist David Graeber. It  has caused a minor viral reaction on the web. See what you think, then read the follow up from The Economist.

  2. I feel like if i was John Maynard Keynes at that time i would also feel like jobs would get easier but as all know it has only become harder. I really don't feel like there are pointless jobs for the reason that some of these so called pointless jobs are what brings home food to many families. Without some of these jobs people would not be making any money and therefore would be poor.

  4. This article states many economical statements. However I do not agree with all of it. John Maynard Keynes predicted that “by century’s end, technology would have advanced sufficiently that countries like Great Britain or the United States would have achieved a 15-hour work week.” I believe that this can’t be true because technology advances each and everyday. The century is not even close to being done. We have a long way to go. He states that these jobs are called “bullshit jobs”. And I agree. They are not the most efficient jobs out there.

  5. I agree with this article because there are a lot of people working jobs all day that don't need any specific skills. and although they're called "skilled workers" most of them are unskilled workers. If you work a job you think is pointless what's the point of doing the job, you might as well do a job that you think is worth something. I'm just surprised that some jobs are considered pointless for example a lawyers job, because i honestly thought that was important.

  6. Its hard to imagine a world so advanced in technology that most people only have to work 15 hours a week. I can't see how this would actually work, because hourly pay would have to increase immensely for people to be able to live their lives normally. Sure there are plenty of meaningless jobs out here, but i think as a society they are actually important and somewhat useful. These bullshit jobs are actually kinda necessary because they do keep people employed, and they have to have a purpose if we still keep them around.

  7. jobs are changing in our society. more and more people are going to college and getting better educations and trying to get a better job that they deserve. the "bullshit" jobs are for the people who cant find any jobs they are skilled for and they are placed in things that people make up to keep them busy and make money. 8. I think that some jobs are creed just to people have a god like they said in the article. Pizza delivery boy was created because people are lazy. Now a days, we have so many resources with computers that we can almost make robots do jobs for us. There re so many jobs that are silly that people get paid to do. one day a male delivery person's job will be gone and a robot will come to our door and deliver mail.

  9. I agreed with the article about bullshit jobs. The reason most of us work is so we can buy whatever our heart desires but with that, we have to work long hours and pay others to do things we can't do. Baby sitters, dog sitters, day care and etc are bullshit jobs because we ask them to do the jobs we should be doing. If everyone worked 15 hour weeks, then everyone who has the degree to do that job would have a job. I think that everyone has been raised thinking that only people that work 40 hours a week have a "steady" or "stable" job. However, no one can afford to live with a 15 hour a week salary which is why people work so hard.

  10. The article made me think for a minute when it said "Bullshit Jobs". I really never knew there were jobs that were considered to be bullshit. I view a job as a regular job even if its being a delivery man or something along that line. I do agree that there are pointless jobs out there that arent neccessary because there isnt a big job market for these jobs such as for example a door monitor. Instead of hiring someone to be a door monitor there should be an alarm system put into effect in case a break in occurs or something supicious happens. Not alot of people want hallmonitoring to be a job of theirs.

  11. I think it's interesting that someone can come up with a term for these types of jobs. I have never really thought about this before, but thinking about it now, it does make sense. I recall of hearing about jobs that are kind of pointless, but they are still kept around. I think the purpose of this is to keep people working and so the economy won't go down again. It helps keep consumers and producers busy.

  12. Alot of the jobs today and unneeded like dog washers and 24 hour pizza delivery men. The pointless jobs are for the people who need to do some type of workand need to make money. Some people work 40-50 hours a week. Today there are more and more people looking for jobs there are more jobs that are pointless than before

  13. this article is both amusing and persuasive because it is true there are some jobs that don't make sense. they just support the other people who have more productive jobs that require long time of labor because they don't have time to do other things. based on our developed technology, labor time should be reduced, but the system is not going right way at least in my opinion. it's hard to say that it's against the moral of working and businesses, but it is right that they need to change the way the system goes and shorten the time of labor.

I thought the article made some good points about how its nice to have fun in the office at work but it also slows down productivity and work for the employees. There has to be a line where "fun" cannot be crossed. It also mentioned how a lack of fairness can lead to depression of employees. I think its important to have fun and be fair in a workplace but to also remain professional and productive.

  15. I found this article interesting because i never thought of this before. As our technology improves we should get small amount of labor hour but instead the working hour increased. Because of this other stupid jobs were made. for example dog washer for people who has dog that don't have time to take care their own dog. Another stupid job was 24 hour pizza delivery that delivers food for late night employer. PK period3

  16. A lot of jobs created now in the 21st century i believe are bullshit jobs and are made just to service other rich people who dont do anything. Many jobs back in early america were carried out to survive and live another day. Although now with the advancement in technology and our countries economic growth as a superpower in the world many of those jobs that were needed to survive are replaced with machines and automated epuipment. The working industry still is an a revolutionary stage and is currently and frequently evolving to how we as a species thrive. - Alex Lopez

  18. i think that this essay is very accurate. there are so many jobs out there and they all need to be filled but we have to give up other jobs to fill the possessions. and what really makes a job valuable? i like the example "your an archaeology professor. why do we need you?" cause most people dont question the value of a job unless it is unskilled labor.

  22. The "Bull Shit Jobs" that employs many people are very stupid. They are just meaningless jobs that people get for no reason. The jobs these people get are 100% useless. Like the article said you dont need 3 people to package meat for the store. Many jobs are also being replaced by machines which cause a decrease in the employment rate. This is only going to grow in the years to come.

  23. This article really says a lot about how jobs are created by people working long hours and very hard. He gave an example that i really liked which was about the 24 hour pizza delivery guy and how businesses with people working late and staying in the office for a long period of time just to get work done. That job was created for convenience of the people working long and late hours. Also he talked about people who are skilled at making cabinets for a living, but they're stuck in a fast food restaurant flipping burgers instead of doing something that they enjoy and are good at. It shows how you're skills and education doesn't help with what kind of job you get if there is no demand for it.

  24. Although this article was not the most interesting article I have ever read, but on certain levels I do agree with where the writer is coming from. And i can see why he feels this way. It was hard to keep my attention reading but I agree with him that people just work to just work and people are getting any sort of jobs. It is wrong because people are not working because they want to, because they have to. The writer was saying that, that is not how capitalism works but it is happening and there is no one to stop it. Personally, in the economy today it is hard to find a job doing what you love and what you have passion for, so for the time being I understand that people getting jobs for doing anything.

  27. It's sad to think that many jobs are useless jobs that aren't really needed. It shows how low the economy is - that there are jobs just so that people could have jobs. I don't think any job is useless because one way or the other one is serving people and earning their salary.

  28. I think this article is pretty interesting...and confusing at the same time. He states that people think they are making a meaningful contribution by working and having a benefit.. but really there not. He also talks about "bullshit jobs" which i can agree with him about. Some people think that working 12 hour shifts makes you a meaningful worker, depending on what it is not always. For example a person who works for a pizza place they live off that money but working all the time is silly.. Its a dumb job its not like working a 12 hour shift in the emergency room and actually making a change to someones life.

And that more people are getting jobs in sales, and service workers, I think he says they tripled. He also says how productive jobs have sort of decreased, because people are taking these jobs. And i agree with that because i feel in a sense that some people become lazy when it comes to school work and their future. and it impacts their future dramatically.

  34. This problem is moral and political rather than economic. Jobs are not supposed to created for keeping people all working. They need to be meaningful. There is a saying, happiness is to do what you like and to make money by doing it. Although there can be no objective measure of social value, it is sad when someone realizes that his job is pointless and loses his motivation.

  38. We need bullshit especially in this kind of society because people are becoming extremely conservative due to the fact that they don't want to spend money and want to save for college. If we don't have these small jobs to spread income through the government then we wont be able to let the government grow in the long run. In a smaller view of this issue bullshit jobs are still okay to have because its a learning experience so you can actually understand the value of money early.

  44. I agree with the article and think that some jobs are actually bullshit. In the article, it stated that there are many occupations that are not necessary. It also tried to distinguish the difference between the perception of what jobs are considered unnecessary and what actually is unnecessary. They mentioned an anthropologist professor and stated how some people may feel that this occupation is not necessary, although it may be important to some people. It also talked about how the person got in touch with a school friend who he hadn't spoken to in a long time and then discovered that he was a poet, and then went on to being the front man in an indie rock band. He heard some of his songs on the radio, having no idea the singer was someone he actually knew. He was brilliant, innovative, and his work had a very important effect on the lives of people from everywhere in the world. However, after a few unsuccessful albums, he’d lost his contract, and was forced to pay debts and then take the responsibility of his newborn daughter who ended up, as he put it, “taking the default choice of so many directionless folk: law school.” Now however, his friend is a corporate lawyer and admits that his job was utterly meaningless and should not exist. This therefore, shows that there are many such professions that are very pointless, although we may not view it this way. People who are actually working in these professions realize that a lot of what they do is very useless. I think that ultimately, the message here is that you should pick a profession that interests you and one that you would not mind doing. There is no point doing a job that you do not care about and that you do not like. You will not be passionate about it, which will affect your work ethics.

Today, technology have made a huge impact in the United States and everywhere else in the country. Also technology have affect the number of worker that exist today then from the beginning of the 1900s. The number of worker dramaticially decreased in the 2000s. I think that is scary to me because soon that there might be no jobs at all in the near future, like in factory, farmers and etc.

  46. This article is really interesting because it made me think about a certain term, skilled worker. When most people in our society now think of skilled worker they think of someone who has a college education and is really smart and talented. When they think of the job a skilled worker has they think in technology some job in a big company doing something really important for the company. They think a skilled worker gets paid a lot more than a normal person. When people think unskilled worker they think no college education. Sometimes high school education. And they think the person is not smart didn’t do well in school and does not have many talents. However this article made me think differently. If you take a cashier from McDonalds and an executive director of a company they have almost the same skills the only difference the degree. So when people talk about a unskilled worker and a skilled worker they are practically the same.

  47. I find it interesting that this man predicted what could happen but didn’t. It seams like this article has a synical tone throughout. My favorite quote was “as if someone were out there making up pointless jobs just for the sake of keeping us all working” I like that because I think that it is the main message of the article. It is also how I feel sometimes, as if there are endless jobs and it dosent stop, any job you can think of it exists. I like how in the end the author reconnets the conclusion with the beginning, how we doing all work 3-4 hour days which was predicted.

  48. I disagree with Graeber. If jobs were pointless, no one would waste their money on hiring people for them. It is common sense. He mentions that this is what would seem to be true, but it isn't quite the case because people are still doing useless jobs. Any job could be debated as either pointless or useless, but it seems that every job has some purpose. If it didn't could it even be called a job?
