One Last Olympic Thought

Couldn't resist this one.

  1. I find it great that a boy who was discouraged by his peers to pursue racing ended up doing so well. It also shows that money is a factor and he had some economic advantages such as having parents who would allow him to delay college and had $10,000 to allow him to compete. Although it was optimistic it’s not plausible for everyone that wants to follow their dreams. - Avneet

  2. Shana Sanichar (Micro P.5):
Although Ted Ligety is an Olympic skier, we see many qualities of an entrepreneur in him. His business would be his skiing career and making sure it is continuously growing. One characteristic we see is that he is a risk taker. Regardless of what his parents said, he still used their support and took off from Hschool to focus on his skiing. Interestingly, many other successful entrepreneurs had left school to focus on their passionate project. Him and his parents had also invested a great amount of money for him to train and compete. They spent $10,000 alone to compete in the United States ski team's development squad. Also, Ligety was never discouraged. His old coaches would tell him he could never be an olympic skier and when he placed in the 300s he never gave up. He found his goal and took the time and investment in order to achieve that goal.

  3. This article is a lesson in both life and economics. When we try to satisfy our unlimited wants with our limited resources, we are often reminded to be realistic with our wants, whether it be by our mother or by the price tag on the windshield of a ferrari. Ligety defied this notion by working incredibly hard to add some realism to the unrealistic. I think this mentality is the crux of the "American Dream." If people commit themselves to working hard enough, they can defy what is realistically expected of them.

  4. This is a pretty cool story. Ligety's combination of talent and motivation took him from mediocrity to the Olympics. His company, Shred, shows how he has been able to stay motivated off the slopes as well. He doesn't want to work for others, likes to take risks, and has the tenacity that both Olympic athletes and entrepreneurs need.

  5. The reason his company, Shred, does so well is because he managed to embody his determination and persistence into his products. He added the "cool" factor that even if one can't make it initially not giving up will get him there.Young athletes need this desperately because the competition is getting tougher each day. To young athletes his products give them the courage and strength they need to push themselves, it does so by reminding them of Lidgety's own obstacles, which keep them going. His story added a dimension of personal connection for his consumers to his products that act as a constant push for them to better themselves as athletes and not give up.

  6. I thought this was a great article because it showed a passionate boy following his dreams. His parents invested in his talents which clearly worked out because Ted Ligety is now a wealthy olympian. Imagine how different his life would be if his parents didn't pay the $10,000 to join the USA skiing team.

  7. Ted Ligety has the attitude of a true entrepreneur. He persevered, even when the situation seems nearly impossible. Additionally, he has turned his olympic sporting into a business. Ligety is an example of how a knowledge in economics and finance can help an individual, even if finance is not their primary occupation. Branding himself has likely assisted him in maintaining his career. Additionally, he will likely be able to enter the world of finance once he becomes too old to do competitive skiing. Having economic knowledge has expanded his options, and it can likely do the same for us.

  8. -when does this story begin?
-his parents are extremely supportive of him
-his perseverance and determination are admirable; not sure if it would always be worth it though
-aww, that's so sweet (hi tape across his helmet with parents as sponsor)
-can determination really get someone that far?
-Ligety became ridiculously decorated during and after college
-he has his mind focused on one thing and really pushed to seek out accomplishments
-his role to the international ski community is incredible; he also takes so many ventures and risks - in a sense he is both an athlete and an entrepreneur
-haha, he has a pretty extreme life and the stuff he does with old cars seems pretty cool
-really does and has captured the persona of an independent person throughout his life
-Ligety is a genius and I see why he wanted to be an engineer
-I can see Ligety's point with the change of the skis, but I don't necessarily think that the change is bad. It might just separate the determined and driven from the others
-do they usually ask for the input of athletes before changing rules?
-Ligety is smart and plays with his head; he's also a very humble guy, fame hasn't changed him from who he was

  9. Ligety serves as a shining example of how not everything needs to be straight forward or planned out for it to be viable. I like how this article touches upon the fact that Ligety realizes he may not ski his whole life. They detail how he is studying forms of business and selling his own image of himself as a brand to produce profit. Though not exactly an entrepreneur, Ligety represents the rare kind of people that does not abide by the structures and guidelines because they are the rules. Instead, he chooses to modify the rules to conform to his own desires, rather than vice-versa.

  10. People like him try to fight their fate and work towards a goal everyone else frowns on. He just happens to be the one success story for thousands of failures. It is amazing that everything completely turned around. Based on what they said about his independence it is obvious that he was smart enough to make his success anywhere he wanted to in life but he picked skiing.

  11. I thought this article showcases the fact that we will always face obstacles in our way. It is l get us to the top of the game, as in the case with Ted Ligety. I feel as though he also made a positive impact by doing the things he loved, and as a result a bit of luck broke around and helped him out. In addition, this also highlight a key characteristic of an entrepreneur: perseverance. The article also talks about him starting a company called Shred; talk about keeping options open for later in life.

  12. Discouragement is the true motivator for an individual with a goal. We tend to desire more and prove others wrong when faced with discouragement, and this is exactly what happened with Ted Ligety. What I feel is most inspiring about Ligety's story is that he started off like most other people with a desire--at the bottom learning the basics. He was considered mediocre throughout high school, until finally he practiced intensely the year after graduating high school, leading him on the road to the Olympics. It's consoling knowing that all other Olympic athletes started off with the basics--learning the first trick/technique. We often think of Olympic athletes to be born with some innate talent, when in actuality that is not true.

  13. Ted Ligety did not let anyone stop him because he was willing to work as hard as he could to do what he love. He's actually inspiring to me because it just shows me that prove to those who doubted you that you are good enough.

  14. The article highlights the ability and performance if skier, Ted Ligety. While the article points out that he was not the most naturally talented, and often looked over by coaches due to his slower times, Ligety was one who dedicated more time that most other athletes because he tried to become the best. The article highlights the very important principle that it is not always raw talent that allows for perfection, but rather it is the dedication and practice that allow people to transcend mediocrity into the sublime. What this can be said about business owners is that, although most will fail in the first few years, it is the entrepreneurs who are willing to sacrifice the time, and energy, and assume high risks that will create successful business models.

  15. This article definitely showed the true power of resilience; plus it had some economic concepts scattered throughout! I thought it was interesting how Ligety chose to pursue skiing after he graduated high school and his opportunity cost was getting a proper college education. I'm even more surprised that his parents allowed it especially since he was mediocre in adolescence. I also wonder what the parent's opportunity cost was for paying $10000 for Ligety joining the developmental squad (and more expenses not listed). I remember that the opportunity cost of paying your child's education is close to $1.5 million, so I wonder exactly how much this decision would be. Regardless, it clearly paid off in the end. Finally, I thought it was interesting how altruistic Ligety was when he came out as an opponent of the new skiing rules to not discourage the younger generation of skiers. Although he advocated for a trade-off, he felt confident with his decision.

  16. As a senior in high school, I find great meaning in Ted Ligety's story. His triumph over his doubters gives me hope that I will one day too triumph over my doubters, whether they be real or imagined. It was all too easy to look at Ligety when he was young and declare his skiing future to be non-existent. Yet, funny things happen in adulthood. People grow and new potential and talent is discovered where before none was believed to exist. In 5, 10, 20 years I will most certainly be completely different from the person I am today; I anticipate breaking free from the chrysalis of my adolescence. I will not be defined by my high school accomplishments; the success of my future endeavors will erase all memory of my youthful failures. I have not yet peaked; up is the only direction for me to go; my future is far brighter than the dim lights I currently live under. This was Ted Ligety's attitude and it shall also be mine.

  17. I like this, A lot. The fact that people told over and over again that his "dream" was too big. he never put it down, he never wanted to give up. when the time came, when his parents gave him one last chance, he proved everyone that doubted him wrong. he become a campion, and all it took was a little push, the thought of not giving up.

  18. I think that Ted had a really strong mindset to skiing but i think that without his parents he could have never archived his big dream and even though they didn't believe that he was gonna become something huge, they just went along with it. In the end i think that if anyone has a set mind to archive something they should never give up until they archived it.

  20. i think his success came from his determination. even though people kept discouraging him and telling him to be realistic, he was realistic but dreaming also. because he was realistic he could make detailed plans to join the Olympics and his parents could support him financially. he and his parents, to achieve their demands, supplied money and effort and used them along their plans.

  21. The article taught me some lessons. Ted Ligety was first discouraged because he didn't have good records but he didn't give up and end up winning gold medal for Torino winter Olympic. He wouldn't be able to accomplish this without his parent's support and his particular characteristic. This story broke my stereotype about athletics because some athletics tries hard to become good. 23. Ted Ligety is one of the most motivated people i have ever heard of, and he is a true role model. He was able to set a near impossible goal yet still achieve it through years of practice and devotion. I love this story because he was constantly told that his skiing carrier would never work out, but he didn't want to listen to them. He knew that if he worked hard enough he could do it, and thats exactly what happened. Thats why i loved this story so much because it is really inspireing.

  24. This story is very motivating. It teaches people not to give up on something just because people say its not going to work out. It also shows that even you yourself should not doubt yourself because you never know what could happen. You could fail miserably or you could succeed flawlessly. Hard work seemed to be a very important factor in this mans life and I praise him for that. He even created his own business while being a ski racer. This man accomplished his goals through perseverance which I will remember as a lesson for myself.

  28. Ted Ligety's ability to work his hardest to surpass obstacles in his way is extremely impressive. Most people including myself will spend more time thinking of a way to avoid challenges then to just get through it. This story makes me realize that if you want to do something and you are willing to put in time and effort, you will be able to do a lot more then you initially thought. The article also made me think about how a lot of people don't end up doing something that they would really enjoy just because other people tell them that they aren't good at it.

  29. I thought this was a nice story to read because it started out negative and then turned into a positive story. I give this guy much respect on how never gave up. 31. I think this article showed how Ted Ligety was a under dog and yet he still succeeded. He was not as good as the rest always doing worse than them and not as fast. He was always seen as from the coach as someone who wasn't as good as the rest. And he was told this over and over and yet he didn't give up he just kept on trying never giving up. He didn't let their words get to him. And after a lot of endurance and training he finally succeeded. He demonstrated true determination with the long hours he put into his training. This can be compared to entrepreneurs because they are also like underdogs sometimes they don't make it big at all and fail. But other times they hit the jackpot, become rich and successful. But took the risk of that. Just like Ted Ligety.

  32. The athlete Ted Ligety shows what is mean to be a true underdog. He wasn't as good as the others and he was even much slower. He would always come last with a slower time than the rest. He was seen by the coaches as someone who wasn't as good, someone who wasn't ready for this kind of sport. He was told over and over by many people that he couldn’t do it that he wasn’t as good as the rest. But he didn’t let those people get to him and he still tried. He was dedicated and determined to win. And after several hours of training he put in he finally succeeded. He showed how everyone thought he wasn't able to do it but yet with true perseverance and determination you can do anything. This can be related to entrepreneurs because they are also underdogs. Sometimes they don’t make and fail. But other times they make it big and become rich and successful.

  40. I believe this is a one in a million event where you find out that someone wasn't the best at something but came out on top. It's what the american people like to see, they want the underdog to be the champ, but it's too risky for businesses to invest their time and money because their odds of success is low and that's why many kids who have that determination failed because they might not have that $10,000 in their families bank account. Ligety had the determination and the opportunity to find success and that's the key to success.

  49. Ted Ligety is a perfect example of a role model. Not only has he achieved his goals, but also has demonstrated that any one could pass through barriers and achieve their dreams. I believe that the negative judgment from his coaches as a child gave him more inspiration and ambition to demonstrate his potential. It also has affected my mindset because I use to always use the cliché phrase that everyone has something their good at. Instead, people should just demonstrate determination and commitment on the certain area they want to improve in. Parents aren't always going to agree that working for an unrealistic goal is a smart move. It is the parents who do agree to this who often have the most successful of children. This is why my parents help me to follow my dreams. They have been coming true before my very eyes and I couldn't thank them enough.
