Military Exercises

We just discussed how military exercises can cause tension and even lead to war. Read this and see what is happening on the Korean Peninsula. Check out a link or two see what has been causing these tensions.

  1. I feel like North Korea is unnecessarily increasing the tension between the nations around the world. Although it is true that North Korea has rights to feel threatened by the military exercises of an enemy nation, it is different from the exercises that Austria-Hungary had carried out to threaten Serbia. Its action was meant to show its power and promote aggression, but U.S.'s goal is to promote peace and defence. I also believe that North Korea is the one preparing for the war rather than other countries because they are feeling more confident with their nuclear technology. I am afraid that the World War III may occur because of North Korea's recklessness and result in great destruction. They think they will be the one to survive, but the truth is that there will be massive destruction in both Korea and U.S. if nuclear weapons are used.

  2. Finding out that North Korean plans to start a war with a "miserable destruction" planned for the U.S. and South Korea was shocking and frightening at the same time. According to the article, North Korea was upset with the joint military exercises going on between the U.S and South Korea. It's scary to think that a war could be started, one with which North Korea is confident will be destructive for the U.S.. I was also shocked to find that there are "Anti- American messages" in North Korea which have become a daily fare there. For me, it was a shock because the United States doesn't really have anti North Korean messages becoming a daily fare here. I suppose the reason is that for North Korea we are seen as very large threat.

I think that North Korea is understandably acting defensively towards the American and South Korean joint military exercises. The article states that “anti-American messages, already [are a] daily fare in the North”. Therefore, when the American military and South Korean military do these drills, they are just further tampering with North Korea’s image of America. This can just give North Korea more incentive to declare war on America (and their ally South Korea). Also, the article states that whenever these joint military drills happen “North Korea warns of war and threatens to deliver a devastating blow” to both South Korea and America. Although these warnings may be very extreme and aggressive, they are a hint that North Korea isn’t joking around and will declare war if they feel it’s necessary. Also, North Korea has a reputation of being aggressive and violent, so America and South Korea should know better.

  4. after reading the article i believe that it's none of North Korea's business who South Korea works with militarily. i don't see how South Korea's relationship with the US affects the Northern Koreans. also i'm no expert in the military but the US military is fairly strong and i think that with the South Koreans they even stronger i don't see why North Korea says that the US military will be miserable destructed. overall i think that North Korea is just jealous and they don't understand what the US and South Korea are trying to do because it sounds like they don't want war and that they want to maintain peace and if they do declare war there is no reason or purpose why they want that. yet, if this war does happen it would be very dangerous because of the nuclear weapons that North Korea has so hopefully this war doesn't happen because many people would lose their lives and in the end we don't need to lose more people in a war.

  5. I think that the most shocking part of this article is that this sense of militarism still is hugely evident today, despite the world's attempts to deviate from that. Also, the sense of imperialism still exists, and out of all nations, these two themes involve our nation the most. The United States is seen as an empire that controls other nations, and in a way, that is true. Even though the Americans don't technically own South Korea, we influence the South Korean government to a great extent. So, when we go into South Korea to perform military exercises, it shows our enormous influence on them. Also, the exercises show how we show off our military, for it's the strongest in the world. Therefore, North Korea, a nation that America has had conflicts with in the past, sees it as a threat.
In general, this article is a perfect example of how history repeats itself.

  6. In Sout and North Koreas war United States have to help, even thought it is not a part of the fight. Only because Unites States had promised to help, so many people have to go on war. Even thought Us has nothing to do with this war it has to come in between because it has to get in the war.

  7. SK Period 9: Even though North Korea's Anti-American threats are nothing new, it's still very disturbing when you consider North Korea's nuclear testing. America and South Korea's joint military exercises are clearly a threat to North Korea. Are these joint military exercises a message of war? That's unknown at this point. However, it's frightening when North Korea responds by saying, "You had better bear in mind that those igniting a war are destined to meet a miserable destruction." While it's important to keep North Korea's threats in the back of our minds, I don't think that we should let their threats control us.

I think that both North Korea and South Korea / U.S. should ease down tensions between each other. If tensions keep rising, then war will be declared and there will be a possibility that WW3 can break out through a system of alliances and national interests. I think that both sides should communicate and meet each other halfway. North Korea feels threatened by the U.S. so if they backed down a little then North Korea wouldn't have to declare war and that North Korea should back down from the South so they wouldn't have to be defensive about it with the U.S..

  9. I feel like the anti-American feeling displayed by the North Koreans is something we should pay close attention too. It especially is concerning because of their background with nuclear power. I think the North Koreans are using that “reputation” to probe us towards war, given their militaristic nature, like when they say American forces would “meet a miserable destruction,” which I think hints towards nuclear attack. They might just be saying that to get everyone all hyped up, when its just a load of propaganda. It kind of gives them power in this way, because now they have the attention of a powerful nation that sees them as a threat. North Korea is just creating tensions with everyone.

  10. I am not sure that it would be wise for North Korea to go to war with America. They have had recent incidents of food shortages. If they do go to war a sanction would destroy them. Their closest ally, China, has condemned their recent nuclear missile tests. If there best ally condemned them, most likely they won't support them. I don't understand why America would want to go to war with North Korea.

It seems to be that North Korea is on one side, While the United States and South Korea are on the other side. I think that the constant threat that a war will break out, and the fact that we are always practicing on Korean terriotory adds a lot of tension to the rivalry that already appears to be going on. I find it interesting how North Korea and South Korea could be such opposites in the sense that it seems that they are enimies. I think that the competition amongst the North and South probably add even more tension, due to the fact that since they are geographically right next to each other, the pressure to have the best army, nav, etc. is extremely high.

  12. I think it's interesting how North Korea and South Korea are still on such bad terms to this day. It's not even that they don't like each other, but it's to the point that if the US joins forces with South Korea, North Korea threatens to go to war with us. I feel like this should have been over a long time ago and that North Korea should just get over the past. -Michlle Lim

  13. Wow. I cannot believe how similar the actions of countries today are to those of about 100 years ago. Like how Franz Ferdinand and the Austrian army executed military exercises down in Bosnia, the U.S. does not have to execute its own military exercises with and in South Korea, which taunts the North and gives them a reason to initiate a war. After learning from World War I, I would think that America has more sense than to test the temper of North Korea, especially while having other wars that are exhausting all of the resources we currently have.

  14. First of all, I think it's crazy that North Korea dislikes South Korea- a part of their own country! I understand that this may have resulted because of previous tensions and disputes that happened between them, but it isn't right to hate people that are a part of your own nation. Aside from that matter, even though I believe that North Korea is overreacting a bit by almost declaring war, I do believe it's a little fair because they have warned both South Korea and America that they will declare war if they continue to perform their military exercises. Although, these military exercises are not doing any damage to anybody so I still think it's absurd that North Korea wants to declare war for this reason. -Maytal Babajanian

  15. I think North Korea simply wants to attract attention to itself. It is a smaller country with not as many allies as the United States. Everytime the U.S. and South Korea do this annual military drill, they come out with a harsh reaction in order to threaten and scare other countries. This fear it instills on other countries gives it leverage to have better trade. If a country doesn't give something to it, they will threaten to hurt them. I think this tactic is smart on their behalf, but also stupid when they are overreacting over simple military drills. This is especially hypocritical considering they are the country testing nuclear weapons. Overall, I believe this is more of a tactic that they are using in order to help their country prosper, not really instigate war.

  16. i think North Korea is trying to show the USA that they( North Korea) are to be feared by all the nations and that they have the strongest military and they can defeat South Korea and USA in war in the blink of an eye. They start to carry out nuclear testing because they want to gain other nations' attentions to show how powerful they( North Korea) are.

  17. North Korea has recently been testing out their nuclear bomb. They feel that, as long as they have their most dangerous weapon, they are very well protected over the other countries. This includes South Korea and also the U.S. North Korea is also very touchy in the fact that the U.S. is on the South Korean side. This can cause problems for the U.S. North Korea said that the U.S. might get into trouble for backing South Korea. This isn't a state where the the U.S. wants to be right now. It is much better to remain out of the problem. They should try stay out of the problem as much is possible.

  18. i feel like north korea has different views on society and how to run their own government and manage their people. starting from a young age children are brought up a certain way according to their nationality's customs and traditions. seeing the things and ideas spurting from north korea may seem rather odd and we may not agree with it but then again they are different in ideals and goals and that comes different ways of executing their plans. in north korea it may seem odd and "wrong" that you should treat others the way you want to be treated, but that's simply because they werent brought up taught like that and thats the same for us

  19. I thought it was really interesting how even in this time period, there are very similar conditions for war; we the United States practiced military exercises in Korea, war would break out, just like during World War I.What I also found interesting was that the US fought on the same side as South Korea during the Korean War, which ended in a truce, not with peace which actually meant that they were still left at war. I feel like the threats that North Korea has towards the US are really irrational and meaningless. They said that, "You had better bear in mind that those igniting a war are destined to meet a miserable destruction.” I think that maybe they were just scared of the US gaining more power.

  20. Chirag Soni World 10 -I think that it was foolish on the US's part to repeat a past mistake that caused World War I. History is reviewed to make sure mistakes don't happen again. We are using this as an excuse to start a war, which in my opinion should not be done. North Korea under Kim Jun Un might be a much more stable place, then it was with their past ruler. Also it was foolish of North Korea to say such a comment because it would be risking much country to start a war because they are so isolated.

The tenacity of the Korean government to refuse to back down and always remain a thorn everybody's side is commendable, to a point. I find it interesting that there is a specific line reserved for US and North Korean communications, reminiscent of the "red telephone" used between the USSR and the US during the Cold War, also a game of "chicken" and diplomatic tensions over nuclear weapons.

All I really have to say to this is that North Korea has to find the root source of whatever idiotic problem that might have started this and solve it from there. Same with everybody involved because everybody is standing around like idiots waiting for somebody to finally to start war to show off who has the biggest guns.

  23. North Korea has been saying for years that they will send nuclear bombs to America because we support South Korea by helping them with supplies. Recently South Korea has been training their military forces right by the borders. This is kind of what started the World War I.

  24. North Korea has been threatening us for a long time. Talking about nuclear testing is definitely asking for war. However the US should have been more careful repeating a mistake from the past. If North Korea continually gets defensive about the joint military exercises, its only a matter of time before war breaks out. I'm sure Kim Jun Un is happy Dennis Rodman is safe in North Korea. :)

  25. I feel that it's wrong for the US to sit there and allow our troops to be performing military exercises when they are completely aware that it instigates and sets off North Korea. However, despite the fact that it's not exactly illegal to perform those military exercises, North Korea needs to be more relaxed and not as tense in that we're going to attack them. All we are asking for is that they are careful and don't start playing with nuclear weaponry when there have been scares in the past. This issue can definitely be settled better, but both sides have to be aware of what the other wants, as well as putting safety into account.

  26. I don't believe that it's right for the North Koreans to be threatening us or the South Koreans for no apparent reason. The South has a right to practice military exercises to protect themselves from future attacks or wars. But, the US should also understand that Kim Jong Un is not a guy to mess around with. They shouldn't be taking actions that could lead to things that have happened in the past. (History repeats itself). I think that they need to have a meeting of some sort and come to an agreement in which both sides are happy with the solution, a compromise.
