  1. I find it disgusting that there are teachers in this world today that use permit corporal punishment. There should definitely be strict laws preventing any teacher from hurting a student in any which way. There have been studies that have shown that physical abuses do not increase learning. All this does is harm the child and give him/her another reason to not want to go to school. Students should go to school without having to worry about getting beaten up. Also, this will show kids that physical abuse is okay which can lead the student to be more abusive towards others. I commend Carolyn McCarthy for introducing the “Ending Corporal Punishment in Schools Act”. I really hope it passes because there definitely should be an end to the practice of children being struck or beaten in schools by school personnel. - Michelle Romano

  2. Teachers should not be allowed to punish student by corporal punishment. I hope the bill against corporal punishment is passed. The teachers doing this to the student can really have a negative effect on them. The students wouldnt want to come to class because they dont want to be hit. This would deprive them of their education which would just lead to more negative things. Also one day the teachers might cross the students limit and then they might retaliate.

  3. I Didnt even know that schools still hit kids. I always hear about it happening WAY back but its surprising to know it's still a current issue. I think that physical punishments in schools should be banned because you cannot learn in an environment of fear. Also having physical pain related to learning is not a good mix. Dont people give themselves pain by snapping a rubber band on their wrists to stop them from doing a bad habit? people only practice that because it relates the bad habit to pain and people like to stay awau from pain. Also, if hitting is ok it would be hard to distinguish how far is too far and can result in serious injuries. Another view point...is it no burden for the teacher at all to have to hit kids? and if its not then who are we letting teach our kids or the kids of this generation. -Julie S. Shin period 5

  4. What would make a teacher even think that it is okay to hit a student? Physical punishments in schools MUST be banned. By hitting a student does not teach them any sort of lesson. Passing this law would force teachers to find other ways to get their points across rather than physical punishment. Students go to school for one purpose which is to gain an education not to get abused. Corporal punishment is disgusting and I really hope that this bill gets passed! - Michelle Hersch Period 5

  5. I think the states who allow this type of punishment should be ashamed of themselves. No one has the right to physically hurt or even touch someone else especially in schools. Schools are a place where students are taught. Students should not be taught that violence is okay. Not only is it wrong to do, but this could lead to abusive relationships. If schools are allowing this type of punishment, they are technically contradicting themselves because throughout our education, we are taught that abusive and violence is bad and we should not do it. I cannot think of one positive factor of corporal punishments. Carolyn McCarthy really needs to stay strong with this argument and win it because this type of punishment is not right. -Melissa Reime pd. 5

  6. When I read this article I was surprised that there are schools in the U.S. that hit students because I thought that it happens in other countries except the U.S. Also, I was surprised that disabled children get hit because it would lower their self esteem. I think that the teachers who hit kids in school are like bullies because they aren't encouraging the students to work hard, they are scaring and threatening them. It would make it hard for students to attend school.

  7. Why isn't this widely publicized? I would think something like this would make newspaper headlines everywhere and the fact that a law that is important like this gets stuck in the same system that is supposed to make our lives better is extremely ironic. If it takes years for just one state to get a law passed banning corporal punishment, how many will it take for the next 19 to follow. I thought if outraged parents could do anything it was bother school districts for change

  8. I think this bill ending corporal punishment in public schools should be passed, physical punishment should not be legal in the educational system. This bill will almost surely be passed if it is voted on, the article says a survey concluded only 23% of respondents believe that it should be legal.

  9. I think that McCarthy is doing a good thing by saying that there should be nomore corporal punishment in this country because teachers hitting kids won't get them to learn more, it will only make matters worse for them. I'm still shocked that there are still states that have this because it is just rediculous that anyone would allow such a thing.

  10. I agree with the congressmen because it is not right to hit students in school. This bill is most likely going to pass because no students should have any violence occur in school. physical punishment should not be allowed in the education system. This isnt an american way of learning, maybe in other countrys.

  11. I honestly had no idea that this was still going around today. I thought it wasn't permitted in any of the states. I think McCarthy is a being a great advocate for this particular bill. I strongly agree with her opinion on how corporal punishment does nothing productive for students. It just adds to more bullying in schools. Also, I was pretty surprised to read that through a survey, 23 percent of people agreed with the use of corporal punishment. I don't agree with corporal punishment at all. School is supposed to be considered a place where students have a good learning experience. It's something that shouldn't be permitted any longer, especially today. Jake, period 5

  13. After reading this article, it really shocks me that people do stuff like this still in our country. I completely agree with senator McCarthy. It is disgusting that kids have to go to school scared and think that they're teachers might hit them. School is supposed to be enjoyable and fun learning environment. I agree that there should be strict laws preventing this. By hitting a child, you are only harming them more. I support Carolyn McCarthy for introducing the "Ending Corporal Punishment in Schools Act". I hope this bill passes and I believe it will because no child deserves to be struck or abused by school personnel. - Rene Singh Period 5
