To act or not to act.... that is the question!

This a great example of why our government(s) choose to act or choose not to act. This case  concerns the environment. You would think a cleaner, safer environment was a no-brainer; think again.

  1. I agree with Obama and not passing this new air pollution act. Yes, our air is polluted and dirty and this would help reduce emissions of smog, which is causing the chemicals, but we are still living. This is not a necessary act that needs to be enforced right away. We are in a huge economic crisis and so many people are unemployed, why should we add on to all the stress? We should first fix the major problems and then deal with air pollution afterwards.

  2. I don't think it was a smart idea for Obama to rejected the proposed rule from the Environmental Protection Agency because many people are upset with this and this may hurt him for his next election. AJB

  3. Its starting to bother me that Barack Obama backs down on a lot of stuff he’s said he believed in. It feels as if he's given up on himself and the country. By doing so, he is losing the support of those who put him in his job in 2008. I understand that it may hurt the economy initially, but he should have to invest in solutions to filtering and cleaning up pollution. People’s health is the number one thing that should matter. Such investment is what this country needs right now!

  4. My reaction to this article is shocked. To make the change from gasonline to hybrid-electric is just so different. All my life I've watched my parents fill gas, now all it takes is a plug in as if it were a cell phone. Although it may benefit the drivers of the country, I am sure that gas companies will be hurting big time in the future if the country makes a transformation into hybrids.
On terms of the car, I must say it is something else. Reading all the features and see the looks, it sure would make a great dream car

  5. I agree with Obama's decision, it would be better to save hundreds of thousands of American jobs and billions of dollars than prevent a long-term problem which can be solved when the economy is doing better.

  6. Obama's decision to reject the Environmental Protection Agency really makes no sense to me. By creating this protection plan, he would be able to have reduced many chemicals in the air which would also benefit people's health. I would assume as being the President he would want the best for people so why not allow this protection plan which benefits the air and the people. He said he is very concerned with the economic distress and people not having jobs but by allowing this process to happen it could create many more jobs for people to have. Even though he is the President and has control over this, I think he made a huge mistake not a rejecting this proposal.

I think it was unwise of Obama to reject the new air pollution rule. The new rule would have decreased emissions of smog-causing chemicals. Obama rejected it because he believed that it would have been a big concern for local governments, especially when we are in a recession. I believe this new rule could have helped our environment.

  9. While I believe a clean environment is vital, I respect Obama's decision to abandon the bill. Due to this terrible economy, there is a ridiculous percentage of people unemployed. By eliminating gases created in factories, we are eliminating even more jobs and creating more national debt. I respect Obamas decision for focusing on the people more.

  10. i think that it is good that the air rule did not pass because people could have lost there jobs if there place of work was shut down due to the new rule CD period 5

  11. I am surprised that President Obama rejected a rule that was supposed to help the air become cleaner because it would've affected peoples health and job employments positively. I do not understand why President Obama rejected the ideas of establishing a range of other air quality safeguards that is going to reduce the pollution in the air. If the air was cleaner seniors and babies would have less of a chance to be sick and have heart problems. I also do not understand why people are drilling oil pipelines in the Arctic to the Gulf of Mexico.

  12. I think that the government should deffinatley make this act official because having a cleaner sociey will lead to less diease and more people will live a healthy life, following along with a higher employment rate in America. I think President Obama should not worry about the cost and do something better for the people. it will be better in the long run.

  14. I could see why Obama made the decision he made to reject that certain rule, so it would benefit the economy, and I pretty much do agree with that. It's a difficult decision to make, but I think it would work in the long run because there are so many people that are unemployed and fixing that would be the start of getting the economy back on its feet again, which is obviously something that really needs to be fixed. So, looking at it from both sides, I could see why environmental advocates were angry about it, but I think his final decision benefitted the U.S. more. Jake, period 5

  15. I agree with Obama's decision because we need to fix up our major problems first before we start to spend millions on other small things that don't affect people that much. The economic crisis is major issue in this country and we should focus more on that then the air pollution even though it would be a great idea. J.D. period 5

  16. There's only one reason why our government, which should be and once was a model for the world to observe and learn from, isn't investing more into research for cleaner emissions. It's because our government has become extremely impotent in dealing with large corporations, such as standard oil, or exxonmobil. Elections nowadays are based entirely on politics, making for desperate potential leaders looking for a handout from any union, lobbyist, or political official. These are perfect breeding grounds for corruption, and it's evident in our lives. Oil unions in this country have become tyrannical- heads of these corporate monoliths can use there money to either bribe or petrify anyone in there way, which means suppression of any clean bio-fuel alternatives that arise to put them out of business. The existence of these massive corporations can't be blamed on any one president or any one administration, it's just been something festering ever since the United States really hit it off and got cocky.

  17. Obama made the right decision by not spending money on the anti pollution law because the first priority should not be about making the air cleaner when we already have laws like that in effect. Obama is focusing on trying to get people more jobs which is better than a law that will spend a lot of money and have a minor effect. I don't think Obama is just trying to satisfy republicans because he's doing what he thinks is right not what they want him to do. Ryan pd. 7

  18. It is unfortunate that today's politicians are unable to pass global warming legislation. We will face the consequences of this inaction years down the line when the Earth has warmed to a sufficient degree to cause major environmental disasters and pattern shifts. As a result, we will look back later on and say why couldn't legislation be passed. -IG, Period 5

  19. I feel that Obama has reasonable reasons for all of his actions, things that we may not be informed about or understand. Though he should also think about how constantly falling short of his plans will effect the public's view of him. He has promised change which is a big thing, and many people looked at him as the gateway of a new life or at least better changes for a better way of living. I do care about the environment, and i feel that more has to be done about pollution but as a president his job is to maintain the welfare of the people in the US. Therefore i think as a president peoples jobs should come first. Though on the other hand the environment is our base, and more environmental problems will start popping up in the future, each time getting more and more serious. Furthermore, with all of the environmental disasters that have been happening it may have been the wrong time to do what he did.

  20. I feel that Obama rejecting the clean environment proposal was good and bad. The bad side to this is that it will cause people to have health problems. But I also feel that it was a good idea that he rejected it also because this isn't that important. Since we are in a economic depression, we should be worrying about fizing the economy than the air quality.

  21. I agree with Obama's decision because we need to fix the major problems first like the economy crisis before we start to spend millions on other things, then after the crisis is over we can turn the focus on the clean air policy- A.S.

  22. I think that Obama did the right thing by cancelling an EPA rule. The reason why I'm on his side is because if that rule was continued more people could have lost their jobs. I understand that we are in an environmental crisis right now but I think its more important to focus on the enonomy.
