Name That Freedom

Case in point when we discussed "you can't value what you don't know and you won't protect what you don't value!"

  1. i believe that this article shows how little people know about the government. if some one is running for a position in government then they should know the first amendment. people want change but how can we have change if people dont know what they are talking about

  2. It is right that people in the U.S. do not know that much about the government. Most of the people say they do know about everything government, but in fact they don't. If people still want to protect the way we govern, we should start learning more about the government. That's why schools are now educating the student about the government, so they can value it and protect it.

  3. This article carries a very important message within it. It is showing that as a whole country we do not know enough about the principles and regulations, this country was founded on.If even political leaders are not sure of whats incorporated in the constitution, then that must mean most Americans are also ignorant. It is imperrative that Americans not forget what makes the United States different from every other country around the world. We have the rights to things such as freedom of the press, and freedom of religion, but if we dont learn and understand these laws, amongst others, we will end up losing them. That is if we want to keep the United States and its principles we must value and be familiar with the laws that distinguish only our country.

  5. I bet Christine O’Donnell is embarrassed out of her mind. But truthfully didn’t even know the answer to her question, but at least I’m not a senator. But when you think about it yeah, the average Joe doesn’t know about the Bill of Rights and the Constitution, so he doesn’t value it therefore he doesn’t protect it. When Jack Balkin a liberal said he was on
Christine O’Donnell’s side I was confused but then he stated that “If her remarks in the debate cause Americans to pull out a copy of the Constitution and read it, that’s all for the good.” Which when you think about it, is a valid point. If this makes people want to know more about government and who were voting to represent us then good! I don’t think Christine O’Donnell is going anywhere now.

  6. I am appalled at how little the average American knows about the rights and privileges he or she takes for advantage on a daily basis. However, I feel that this event has brought light to this issue, on an even higher level- due to the fact that someone running for a position in the government does not know “the government” like the back of her hand, people are realizing the mistakes we are making. This reminds me what Mr. Kramer continues to say (something along the lines of): ignorance will lead to your destruction. If we don’t know about the freedoms that are guaranteed to us, then they can be very easily taken away from us. For example, a few weeks ago regarding the mosque being built in the city, people were saying that this is wrong- HOWEVER because everyone is guaranteed a freedom to choose their own religion, the building of the mosque was valid. Hopefully, this will change.

  7. This article gives a clear explanation of how little some people in the United States know about the Bill of Rights / First Amendment. Although she made a point, it was not enough to support it with her reason. Also, in the article, it stated how 53% of the people surveyed agreed that American is a Christian nation. The people are just bias against their own religion and don't truly know the meaning of the first amendment. elizabethc.

  8. It's funny to see that what law students and the public laughed about is actually something that may illustrate the fact that most of us don't sit down to read a part of the Constitution every day. We may even laugh about it, but if another situation with an amendment unknown to us came up where a candidate didn't know about the law, would we as people really catch that mistake? Also, the end of the article mentions the debate about the religion(s) that the Constitution allows. The fact that the elderly woman chastised Gene Policinski about how the U.S. is a Christian nation reminds me of the wars on religion that have occurred throughout history, like the Arab-Israeli Conflict, which is very extreme. It shows how passionate and strict the world really is about religion and how these bring up heated debates although that shouldn't be the case.

  9. People will not strive for change when it is not needed, but when the time comes when change needs to occur in an orderly manner, citizens will not have the knowledge how to do so

  10. This article is a good example of bringing attention to the fact that most citizens of this country don't understand their own basic rules. This is a problem that should be greatly changed immediately. Especially for someone who is trying to be elected to rule a even small part of the country and make a change. It wouldn't hurt to quickly go over the rules just to be more knowledgeable and more understanding and definitely not embarrass themselves in front of a crowd of educated people like Christine O’Donnell, the Republican candidate for senator in Delaware did.

  11. this article is outrageous. how can someone running for senate, a govt position not koe the constitution. i would understand if she was a regular person becuase there are a lot of immagrants that dont know whatis in the constituion, which is reallt ironic because they came to america for the rights that we have. and i think that she is gonna lose, and if she wins then there is gonna be a mega problem because she wont know what policies she stands for and she wont be able to protect it.

  12. this artile is a perfect example to show that the average person does not know the basics of the politics. and if people dont know the basics, it cause them to disvalue it, and without value nothing may be prtected. i also find it crazy there is someone that is running for senate, and bareley knows what shes talking about. it is highly doubtful that she will be elected because what she believes in is fake

  13. This really puzzles me because I can't understand how someone can run for the Senate of Delaware and not know what is clearly stated in the first ammedment. Besides the fact that she didn't know it herself, many americans don't either. A lot of America's citizens didn't know what was stated in the first ammendment and that says a lot about our country. We preech for free rights and freedom of religion, but yet we don't know what is stated in the first ammendment and that really outraged me.

  14. I thought this article showed that many people don't establish some understanding of the Constitution and its ideals. But, the topic of religion stated in the Constitution kind of brings about some debate. I believe that the first amendment, "Freedom of Speech" can be very flexible with its meaning. With freedom of speech, can't religion be free too? -Kevin Yu World pd. 6
