  1. i think that it is important that we honor armistice day as a day to reflect back upon those soldiers who risked their lives in order from their country to experience the freedom and liberty it enjoys. it is a day to remember those who fought so hard for not only their rights but for their people. it gives us a chance to mourn for those who lost their lives during the war and for those who went through rough times in the trenches. i think that we should not take our freedom as well as our life, liberty and pursuit of happiness for granted because these are not given qualities but qualities we are fortunate to have and express. for us to have this opportunity on November 11th to remember those who are the heroes of our nation is crucial.

  2. I never knew the real meaning of Veteran's day until now. This article shows that Veterans Day is observed on the anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I. The United States has had to rely on the sense of duty and sacrifice of its armed forces and therefore in wartime, veterans deserve particular gratitude, and disabled veterans need the best care the nation can give.

  3. I never new the actual history of Veterans day, and I always thought that Armistice Day was just no longer observed. The passage taught me more about Veterans Day, and also allowed me to appreciate it more. WW1 was undoubtably a tragedy, and as we know, although it changed a lot, we didn't much more out of it other then massive debt and many deaths. I think its say to say the war is regretted, and Veterans Day reminds us about all those who died, for a war that could have easily been avoided. This regret also explains why The Allies blamed so much on Germany, they probably wanted a scapegoat ad someone to blame all the tragedy and death on.

  4. Novemeber 11th was a day where it was international peace. They thought that the meeting would cause for everything to stop and be peaceful. This lead to WW2 but it was not as bad WW1. This day is also kow as Veteran's Day

  5. I had no idea that the Veteran's Day that we know of today had to do with the World War I. Now that I think about it, it can't be a coincident that Wilson had declared peace armistice on November 11 and that we dedicate November 11 as a national holiday for those who died fighting for that peace. I hope that those who suffered from the great war appreciate that the Congress today commemorates the tragic death of all the heroes who sacrificed their lives to fight for this nation.

  6. Well, I think thats after reading this timeline I think that it shows that the countries almost regreted the war that's why they mad an amnesty day and had ceremonies takelae in Britain and France. I think that they fell bad that we lost all these people for a war that didn't need to take placeand was useless in all the countries point of veiw. In 1919 when Wilson said those lines it showed that everyone that fought would be viewed as a hero in eyes of people in the future. I think that it's neat that Veteran's Day is on November 11 because that's when the treaty of Versailles was made and that was also the day that everything went wrong and changed the world in a big way.

  7. Throughout the dates being shown, it shows how the armistice day that happened in World War 1 actually evolved into being Veterans day today. It should how at first, in the U.S., they thought that armistice day was a day to remember the soldiers who fought and died in battle. But later on, a cemetery was built for the soldiers in battle. But this cemetery was later also used for the soldiers in World War 2 and also in the Vietnam War. The U.S. later came to realize, that the proper name for a day like this should be Veterans day. Because that would be a day in which all the brave soldiers who fought for their country would be honored and remembered.

  8. I never knew that Veteran’s Day came from the day in World War I when nations implemented an Armistice between Germany and the Allies. Having a holiday honor that day, shows just how significant it was to the entire world. While reading the article one thing I found interesting was how after that day, nations continued to make important announcements at the same time the next year. They viewed that day as an important marking period for future events (ex. the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery, parades and public meetings). Another thing that I found interesting was how 46 states changed their Veteran’s day observance from the fourth Monday of October to November 11th as if they were attached to the date already. I liked how the states did this. It showed that many people still did care for those who served and realized the importance of that original date in 1918.

  9. I found this timeline to be very interesting and it seemed to be one of the more positive things that came out of World War I. World War I had been the deadliest war up to that point, and many people had served and unfortunately died. It is nice to see that a day was taken from the year to honor those that served, and remember those that had died for their valiant efforts. It was also a day in which international steps to peace were taken. It is somewhat ironic that Veteran's Day falls on November 11th because this is a day in which people observe moments of silence and remember those that had served in the war. However, November 11th also marks the day in which the world signed one of the worst treaties in history, the Treaty of Versailles. This treaty had been ineffective and was not able to prevent further conflict in the world. I found this very interesting.

  10. It's interesting to see the evolution of Veterans Day. Despite the number of years that have gone by, the veterans and the price they paid for our nation's wars have not been forgotten, but have been emphasized upon. I agree with the Legislation's decision of officially changing Veteran's Day back to November 11th because it adds a sense of closure to the date. Only on that day can you say, “This is the day the Great War ended.” It gives you more of a connection to the war and the people who fought and died in it, rather than holding the holiday on a date (the fourth Monday of October)that doesn't really correspond with the war itself (at least I don't think it does...). November 11th is the symbol of an end to the “tragedy no one wanted.”

  11. World War ended with the implementation of an armistice.I also thought it was really interesting how in 1938, November 11 was made a legal Federal holiday, Armistice Day and then in 1954, the name got changed to Veteran's Day. I didn't know that Veteran's Day was called Armistice Day before I read this. I was wondering why all the states except for Mississippi and South Dakota followed suit. And then, other states changed their observances back to November 11.

  12. Apparently they switched the date the first time so they could increase the amount of three day weekends and promote traveling. People were angered, so they switched it back. IT wasn't right of the government to switch the date of a very significant holiday, just so people would go out more. It's good that the people of the U.S decided to keep the important day on the proper date. AA Per 9

  13. SK period 9: It doesn’t matter whether you call it Armistice Day or Veteran’s Day. What does matter is that we have pride in our country and take the time out from our daily lives to honor the heroes who survived and died for our country. When Armistice Day began, it caused the war to stand still until the official Treaty of Versailles was signed in 1919. Through the years this special day became a legal holiday. The date changed, but the meaning behind it did not. Thinking about the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier should remind us all of the loneliness, sadness and horror of war. We have to stand strong for our beliefs, but the loss of human life is hard to deal with and understand.

As we learned about the horrors of war and the effects it has on societies and governments, I think that it's important to remember what the past has taught us to prevent anything similar to happen in the future. By giving honor to those who fought, we bring a remembrance to the war and the difficulties that it brought, so we can take precautions to avoid wars like this from happening again.

  15. When I read this article, it amazed me how significant number can be in history. The fact that government had gone through so much trouble and so many changes to honor the veterans who fought in wwi on November eleventh specificially shows how much meaning the specific number has because of the Armistice day in history when the shooting from both sides (Germany and Allies) had finally ended. The significance of this number is a great symbol of the honor and appreciation the veterans deserve from us for their great devotion in risking/losing their lives for our country. -Maytal Babajanian

I was bemused by why the date of a holiday like Veteran's Day, originally Armistice Day, would be changed. It serves little purpose to change it, and would still help commemorate its original purpose as Armistice Day; perhaps they simply wanted to create the distinction that the holiday was no longer honoring the armistice, but for veterans?

I think that the establishment of Armistice Day (or Veteran’s Day) was extremely important. First of all, it gave a reality check to those that were originally so eager to enlist. This day showed that war is evil and millions of soldiers gave up their lives to fight for their home countries. Also, I think that Armistice Day was an important movement towards peace. The loss of loved ones was a connecting bond between feuding nations. Each nation could relate to this which is why not only America but also other countries (such as France and Great Britain) hold ceremonies for Armistice Day.

  18. I thought this article, was very interesting because I never was aware of the facts of 11-11-11. The reliability was questioned on the website because after some research the foundation seemed trustworthy but the information was said to date back to 2005. I also did not know many of the information and it was interesting to see the Asian countries activites during this time period.

  19. I get the fact that this day is supposed to be important but can they really hope for it to last? Obviously they did but they with all the warfare that was being produced, someone was going to be threatened and it was only a matter of time until another war broke out.

  20. After reading this, it shows how much the date of 11-11-11 means. I think that this was a universal way of creating and maintaining peace for at least that time. I think that the idea for the tomb of the unknown soldier is an extremely sentimental and meaningful thing to do on all levels. In a way, it almost represents all that have fallen, and all the people who have been not only directly affected, but also indirectly affected by the war. Even today, I think that we lose sight of the real meaning of Veterans's day. It is more about a day off from school rather than a day to honor the ones who have fought for our country. I also still find it ironic how the nickname for world war 1 is the great war. Even thought the money spent and the time dedicated was "great", the amount of deaths and tragidies it caused was not great, but terrible.

  21. I found this post very interesting, especially how the name and time of the day where those who lost lives fighting for our country are honored changed throughout history for many years. They changed the day from November 11th to the fourth Monday in October back to November 11th. The name of the day, first dubbed "Armistice Day" was changed to "Veterans Day" under President Eisenhower. In addition, I learned that holidays are chosen by the individual state, not federally, even though states usually follow Federal regulations on holidays, which is something I never knew.

  22. World War I ended only because of W. Wilson, he not only wanted to stop the war, but he also wanted peace as in he wanted no future wars. There were so many treaties, and other things in which the countires promised not to declre war, or they had to pay a lot of money, and eventhough they did all that, there was World War II. Wil son had done something that no one could do. Even after years everyone thought about the war, and what had ahppen, and so they focused on being prepared before hand, if there is a war again.

  23. 11-11-11 is a special palindrome day.on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month fighting stopped on the Western Front. This date could be written in any country because all the numbers are the same. This made the day even more special.

  24. I personally did not find this site interesting at all and it was hard to get myself to read it. After taking the hardest step and making myself read the article, I found it quite challenging to understand . I just don't find backgrounds and histories of things important, so the history of how Veteran's Day came about and why it's on 11/11 doesn't interest me. -Michelle Lim

  25. It's shows that people don't really realize the impact of war until they're actually living through it. Only then can they really appreciate the people that put their lives forward to protect our nation. That's what Veteran's Day is all about- a day to appreciate the soldiers that have represented and are representing our country. This started after Americans saw the devastation WW1 out us and millions of others through. At first, most states were negligent to make this an official holiday, however, as the impact of wars to come( WW2, Korean War, Vietnam War, etc.)increased, the popularity of this day increased, for Americans were coming to realize what a gruesome act warfare really is.

  26. I think that it’s a good thing that we have Veteran’s Day because we should honor our soldiers who defend our country, especially those who have lost their lives. I was surprised to hear about the history of November 11th because I didn’t really know much about it and how it was connected to Veteran’s Day. I found President Woodrow Wilson’s quote very moving, "To us in America, the reflections of armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory…” I didn’t know how big November 11th was and that it was a national holiday before. I didn’t even know that November 11th used to be a national federal holiday and that Veteran’s Day used to be called Armistice Day.

  27. It's quite interesting to see how something as simple as stopping a war really impacted us a society and a country. Not only did it grow from being a day in commemorating the end of WWI, but into something much more than that- respecting and thanking the people who fought for what we have today, and as a society we value the freedom we have, and have realized how important it is to honor those who made that possible. It's amazing how just a change in thought is really able to change our viewpoints and make a belief into something bigger than what it originally stood for.

  28. Veteran's Day is an extremely important day because we honor all those soldiers that fought for our country. It teaches us the importance of their existence and how we might not be the same without them. It shows that we need to take care of our soldiers returning from war and that they deserve the best. It also shows how people don't really know how important day this is and that they need to learn the history behind it.

  29. Veterans Day is an important holiday in our nation because it gives thanks to those people who risked their lives to protect our freedom. People under estimate what exactly the soldiers did for us because we really cant imagine what they've done because both world wars were unimaginable.

Veterans day is very important to appriciate and remember all the soldiers that risked their lives to defend all of us in America. It is extremly important to give back to these people after all they gave up for us.
