"Only in New York"

The article says "Only in New York" what do you think?

  1. I find it quite ridiculous that the New Yorkers began to chant a Beatles song after hearing a very passionate, prejudiced rant against the muslim population. Although ten years ago during the terrifying moments of 9/11, anti-muslim feelings were overwhelming in this country. However, it seems that in those ten years, all the hatred was forgotten. While many of the muslim population in America live in fear and resentment from American reaction to the 9/11, the New Yorkers are acting otherwise. I don't understand how resilient the residents of this state is. -Raphael Kim

  2. I think that these things happen, for the most part, in New York. Since the 9/11 attack, there have been countless numbers of attacks made to the Islamic religion. Many were killed and many still can not get over it. That's why these revolts continuously happen in New York; it's where many lives were lost.

  3. from this article i can determine that since 9/11 many people have emerged as anti-muslim. these people publicly try to convince others to also oppose the islamic religion. this has cause many muslims of all different ages to feel rejected and unwanted.

The article at one point notes the drastic contrast between response of New York Residents to anti-Muslim propaganda between the span of about 10 years. I feel this illustrates how quickly a major event can pass from the public spotlight and the characteristic indifference of a society where "major" and exaggerated, biased news has become so prevalent. At the same time, however, the article also illustrates the diverse culture of New York that makes its residents generally rather accepting of different cultures. The firestorm of hate generated by 9/11 can still be felt a bit today, but most people are accepting of Muslims and think nothing of it. I wouldn't go and say this is limited to New York, though; I would expect it to be true of most diverse areas, although a Beatles song is, admittedly, on the more quirky side.

  6. After not only reading the article, but also watching the video, I had many reactions. One of them being shock and disbelief in what some people still think today. Just because one type of person did a bad thing, you shouldn't mark everyone of the same type the same way. Jones was not only discriminating, but he was also segregating. When he started saying bad things about the Islamic religion, this is what made me angry. All he was saying was based off of one event that happened. What I did find pretty cool was that, that one guy which started singing about love. Not only was he singing, but a lot of other people were singing too. This helps remind us that love can overcome even the hardest thing. And that love is better than hate and holding a grudge. The title "Only in New York," is very interesting. New York is a very diverse place. Tons of people, from different parts of the world. And the coolest thing is that people can say anything they feel or want to. In New York, people aren't afraid to speak their mind. And that is exactly what happened on that day.

  7. I agree with the title of this article/video. New York is probably one of the only places in the world where something like this would take place. There are so many people of all different kinds of races and religions in NYC, that for the large part people have grown to look at people as people and not by their nationalities or cultural beliefs. Instead of listening to this man, heartlessly insult a religion, they united and began to sing "All you need is Love", by the Beatles. This is true, because all you do need is love. If everyone loved each other and were willing to get to know people without judging them, then we would be a better society. It is good to know that people in New York united and stood up for what is right.

  8. I don't think that this could've happened only in New York. There are many good people in this world who aren't bystanders and would not let someone put down a whole religion or other group of people, and so it should not be segregated to just New York. This kind of thing may be more likely to happen in New York, since New York has such great diversity which may cause the people to be more tolerant and acceptive of different cultures and one another more, but that does not mean you should exclude other states or countries as up-standers.
Also, it's kind of cool how the people who stood up for the Muslims did so through song. It shows how powerful music (especially the lyrics)can be while uniting all the people together~

  9. Overall, I feel that it is very interesting to see the contrast in people’s reactions and their different methods of protesting. I feel that this articles shows that not everyone will have such negative reactions to the anti-Muslim ranting. According to this article there are still many New Yorkers who appear to have more of an open mind. The subject of Muslims in this country is a very raw topic in this country and can still elicit many strong feelings and emotions from people as demonstrated in this article.

I found this video and article really interesting because it just shows how ignorant people can be. I highly doubt that Terry Jones has researched accurate information about the Muslim religion. He seems to be blinded strictly by the fact that “Muslim” terrorists were the ones who caused 9/11. However, it’s comforting to know that not many people agree with him. At the beginning of the video, people in the crowd were disagreeing with him and saying how he’s a hypocrite. Then a brave man decided to sing the Beatles song “All You Need is Love”, and I feel that this is a very significant gesture. I feel like that by singing this, this man is suggesting that instead of having hatred towards those that are different than us, we should love and appreciate our differences. Just because someone is different doesn’t mean that they are wrong or evil. This is what Terry Jones fails to see, which makes him very naïve and immature.

  12. Well, I wasn't surprised to see that Terry Jones, the man radically protesting Islam, was of today's older generation. I also wasn't surprised that almost all of the people who opposed him and chimed in on the Beatles' song were of the younger generation. While those of the older generation are more religiously intolerant due to the way they have been brought up and their experiences, people currently of the younger generation have become more tolerant of different religions due to the integration of people from different backgrounds at such a young age; even from since we've been born. While we have grown up with kids of other religions, this is not the case for people of the older generation which is the main reason these people protested the protest against Islam. For these reasons, I do not think that something like this would happen "only in New York", but with most of the younger generation. The reason it is more likely in New York than in a state like Texas because Texas is more conservative in terms of accepting other religions and backgrounds due to the events of its past. So I don't think it would only happen in New York, but around the country with most of the people of the younger generation.

  13. I found the video and article to be very interesting and inspirational as well. In the video, Terry Jones publicly spoke about how awful the religion Islam was. In the beginning, no one said a word (whether they agreed or not with his views). However towards the end, people began to fight back. In fact they even started singing ‘All You Need is Love’ by the Beatles. Seeing this made me really happy, before watching him rant about the wrongfulness of the Muslim religion got me upset. This fighting back showed that others did care. At the end of the article, it said “Only in New York.” Although there are people everywhere in the country who are very much engaged in fighting prejudice, this standing up for what right is special to New York. The plane crash occurred in New York, so it only seems right that more people would be in a fighting mood and full of forgiveness.

  14. their is racial discrimination all across the world, and in each and every country, their are different opinions and ideas based on their beliefs, experiences and ideals. But what all of us have to accept is that we are all equal and that if we do hurt someone else or put down someone else by grouping them into their religion, ideals and belief, there will be no progress in the world, but if we do learn to understand each other and "love" one another, then their will be progress, progress as we work together as one

  15. SK period 9:First, I think it's sad that the Islamic community in the U.S. lives in fear of being suspected of every wrongdoing. It's racism and prejudice that fuel this fear and have for too long. Second, I think that it's crazy how far someone will go to prove that they or a group of people are better than someone else. When I read this, I was shocked to hear that Terry Jones, who is a pastor would do such a terrible thing. I think it's great to have pride in your religion, but it's wrong to do something that deliberately angers, hurts and could potentially cause violence. What Terry Jones did was unthinkable. Burning the Koran is equivalent to burning the bible. I would think that a pastor would be more accepting and show greater compassion and tolerance of others. Apparently, Terry Jones didn't learn that lesson. Finally, while I feel for the many lives that were lost on 9/11, I know that hate and a mob mentality won't solve anything. In the end, the Beatles kept the peace.

  16. I usually do not find articles interesting at all, but I really liked this one. I personally am disgusted by racism, and it always blows my mind how because one twisted man of a specific race did something terrible, they believe that all people of that race are just like him. It makes no sense to me whatsoever. This video was starting to get me very annoyed, until the man started singing "All You Need is Love", which completely changed my mood. It was a great video, especially when all those people joined in to sing, overpowering the voice of the man who was so ignorant and hateful. -Michelle Lim pd 9

  17. New York, bieng the city with the highest population in the whole entire United States, demonstrates a vareity of cultures and ethnic backgrounds amoung its people. With events that have occured in the past, people, like Terry Jones tend to discriminate against certain minorities in these diverse cities, in this case bieng the Muslims. Most people would either support him in his beliefs, or strongly disagree and fight back. However, I feel that bieng a New Yorker, we do a little bit of both. At one point, you see us rallying on the streets, discriminating Muslims of thier way of life, but then almost right after, we're promoting the fact that we should all learn to love and accept eachother for who we are ( thus the song " All We Need is Love"). Only in New York do we have major ethnic and cultural clashes among people and yet so much tolerance and acceptance at the same time. Many industrial cities other than New York have smaller scale versions of this going on as well due to huge floods of immigration. This article happens to be a fairly recent example of the aftermath results of a flood of immigration during an industrial revolution.

  18. I am totally opposed to this. I feel that it is important to embrace every religion, as their views are just as important as ours. Also, it is important to keep in mind that the majority of individuals who are Muslim do not present themselves in a manner that would make us believe that they have any intention to harm. In addition, there are extremists in every religion, and just because a group of extreme Muslims committed an act of terror does not mean that all Muslims are bad, or take their views to the extreme.

  19. My first response to this article, before hearing/reading about the people start singing the beatles, was that i was in complete shock. Mr. Jones was an example of one of many people who stereotype all Muslims/people of Islamic religion as bad people simply because the cruel individuals who were responsible for the tragedy of 9/11 happened to be Muslim. Our country claims that everybody is equal and there should be no existence of prejudice, which is of course the moral subject. The words of Mr. Jones and many other people who speak badly and judge other religions, such as Muslims, are proof that there still are people out there who dont understand the concept of equality. They dont know as much as they think they do about the Islamic religion, they are only trashtalking it because of the people involved in 9/11. I think it is absurd and completely immoral to have the guts to stand in public and talk badly of a religion that many people use as their life guidline. The man who started to sing a song about love by the Beatles is a true example of what people all across the world should act like. The fact that everybody else around him began to join in and sing freely and loudly with eathother, despite the fact that they were all strangers to eachother, made me realize there still are great people out there who understand the concept of equality and the badness in discrimination, whether it be towards a race or a religion. This sort of unity and kindness needs to spread all over to eliminate hatred and judgement.

  20. I think that the fact that this man would even consider saying in public, in front of all races and religions, that the muslim religion is, "a religion of lies". I think that the majority of people were appauled, even if they weren't muslim. In my opinion, i think that everybody was thinking about doing something to stop it, but they didn't really have the "guts" to, or they just felt that it wasn't really neccesary. I think that the man that started singing the love is all you need song was not only corageous, but speaking on behalf of everybody. In terms of religious beliefs, i think that a lot of people would stand up for a religion thats being negatively talked about, just like they did to the man talking negatively about the Muslim religion.

  21. In the video I liked how people were against the man(who was talking against Islam) even though they knew what had happened on 9/11. People still had faith, not everyone thought that Islam is a religion of lies. In the article too it was so unpredictable how everyone were screaming and singing. There very few people who think that the Islam promotes violence, that is so not true. Only because one person is wrong it doesn't mean everyone is. I hate that some people think some religions are better than others. It was funny that in the video a man was holding a board which said that the man who spoke agaist Islam was an idiot. Probably everyone present there thought so because they didn't think Islam is a bad religion and it is not. pd9 IP

  22. I think that it was kind of cool how people responded with a song instead of just using more hate. I would probably just curse at him and then leave. I think another thing they could have done was completely ignore him. Although it's probably not what he means, but burning the qua ran is actually the proper way to discard it. AA Per9

I think that this is so cliche that a person who is of another religion would look for an excuse to bash another person's religion. The phrase "Only in New York" makes even more sense to that. Only in New York would the police officers just stand around and not even notice the guy. I get it the event of nine eleven did take the lives of many police officers and they might take the side of the pastor but they should at least remember what their job is. They took this job for the law, not for revenge.

  24. Chirag Soni, World History 10. : I think that it is ridiculous that egypt viewed one man's thoughts as what America as a country believes. I also thought it was very immature to burn a religious book, because it can be looked at by saying if you dont like someone you destroy one of their important possessions which is like pretty immature. Asper the way the crowd acted, I felt that it was expected because, in New York many people were affected by 9/11 and the feelings are still there so they might judge all Muslims. Also because of the diversity in New York I think this would happen.

Example in the video one guy had a white board and wrote "idoit," on it. Even though people did put it in a song I think overall its disrespectfull and rasict and people have no need to be reacting to there opinions in that way.

  29. I think this article and video sends a really powerful message. Terry Jones, a person who acted completely disrespectful towards Islamic people, set fire to the Koran. He did this in public and put down this religion, which to me, was definitely inappropriate. Even though Terry Jones went completely out of line, I’m happy to know that there are people out there who are not bystanders and actually take a stand against people like this. Even though you don’t normally see people beginning to sing in the middle of New York City, it was very brave of that man to start singing the song “All You Need is Love” by the Beetles. And he picked the perfect song; nobody should judge anyone because they are different, everybody should love each other and all their similarities and differences.

I believe that this wouldn't only happen in New York. There are crazy people everywhere, like Terry Jones, trying to degrade other peoples' religions for no legitimate reason at all. So the fact that most people would not condone the act of doing so is and should not be 'only in New York'. Instead it should be in every other state. I think that some people don't realize that the planes weren't the only thing hijacked on 9/11; the religion of Islam was hijacked that day also.
