Stop, Its Against the Law!

Government is supposed to help give structure for the society "we" would like to live in. The only problem is "we" have a lot of ideas about how "we" should live. Analyzing this competition of ideas or interests is the core of this course. Read this article. Are we closer to a clear definition of what "we" want society to look like or is it something else?

  1. california seems to be banning the wrong things. they are not focused on whats important, instead they are focused on smaller issues rather then the more important once. - M.K

  3. It seems like no one can be different. Everything seems to have a law behind it saying we can't do it.

  4. Okay....WHAT!? These bans or in the process of getting approval bans are ridiculous! No bonfires? Hello, that's what beaches are for. How are they health hazards? It's just a big fire, geez! And what is up with using perfume in the libraries? It doesn't interfere with librarians at all, if anything it makes the building smell nicer. Also, why would they ever try to ban circumcision? It's a healthy procedure for guys, it's not hurting anyone. The only two things I agree with from this article is the ban on " psychotherapy aimed at making gay teenagers straight" and making porn stars wear condoms(I think they should do that regardless). And finally, the thing that made me laugh was the ban on plastic bags. That's the stupidest thing I've read recently. Nobody wants to bring their own reusable bags when they go shopping or pay to get a paper one, even if it's only 10 cents each.

  5. This article shows that southern california is shaping society they way the government wants it to be like. The beach's are know for their bond fire pits when people go there at night. The bond fire pits are apart of the culture down in southern california. Taking them away is taking part of the culture away. Payin an extra 10 cents for a bag is ridiculous. i can see how it affects the enviorment but bringing your own re usable bags is just not what the people want. Stores sell bags in the store. Who wants to buy a reusable bag when the store just gives you a plastic one. In my opinion bond fires are not a health hazard. Its not that big of a deal that the beach has to take them away. Im sure that the people that live there would not want that to happen.

  6. I think that someone should make a "banner" telling the people of the United States that they need to "band" together against this crisis. Before you know it they'll have banned "band-aids" and "bantering" with your friends when you meet them on the street. People in California won't even be able to wear "bandannas" or eat "bananas". Everyone will spend their days sitting around playing the "banjo" and never do anything with their lives.

  7. i think its stupid that the gov't is banning things that are part of our everyday lives like plastic bags. there are some laws put in place to protect us & keep us safer such as banning smoking in common places. but with all the laws banning what we wear, what we do & how we do things, sooner or later, the government is going to control every little single thing that we do and we're not going to be the "free" country that we're known for.

  8. Wow! I remember when America meant real freedom. When you could do as you please. But now we have all these things prohibiting us and telling us we can't anymore. Put a ban on bans!

  10. Some times it's good to have bans and somtimes it's bad to have bans. Good bans like no smmoking is good for our health and enviroment. Bad bans like if your bushes that are too tall you need to pay money are just limiting people's right without a legal reason. pd6 Emily.h

  11. Government making bans is supposed to helping us. Some bans are good and some bans are bad. Bans like no smoking are good for people's health and enviroment. Bans like if your bushes are too high you need to pay money is just not good for our world or anything and it limits people's right. So those bans should be canceled.

  12. I believe that the laws that California are trying to pass and the things that they are trying to ban are unconstitutional. For example, when California attempted to ban smoking medical marijuana in appartments, it wouldn't help prescribed patients get their daily/hourly/etc dose of what they need to treat whatever it was prescribed for.

  13. This article shows us that little by little, we are losing our rights and freedom.Since we have a broad idea of what our society should be, our government the makes ridiculous laws regarding them. Our freedom is on the verge of complete non- existence. A.L

  14. I believe that "we" are not closer to a solution, but we are just creating more issues. Some of the bans do make sense such as smoking on the beach and near ATM's. But trying, and almost succeeding to ban circumcision is in my opinion a violation of personal choice, just like abortion. I think everyone has different views of how a society should look, and certain rules and regulations should be enforced, but I also think that some rules and regulations just make me angry, and want to rebel against the government. They're trying to form this perfect society which is impossible. I personally do not think we are any closer, and the more the government tries to control every little thing people do the further we will get from the solution.

  15. i feel like to gov't is taking control of our everyday lives. i understand laws like no smoking in public areas, but not allowing plastic bags is a bit excessive. i also understand that it would be better for the enviroment. But cars are bad for the enviroment but you dont see them banning cars. i just think that the gov't is trying to take control of our every day lives.
