Chinese VP Ends U.S. Tour on Friendly Note

In case you were unaware, China is preparing for a leadership change. Read this article to who's on deck and what that might mean for US/China relations.

  1. At first I thought that under the hand of Mr. Xi, our relations with China may improve. He seemed friendly and not how a communist leader typically acts like. If he is as friendly and "ordinary" as he hopes to seem, then the tension between the US and China may decrease. But as I kept reading, the author described how past Chinese presidents have came off as friendly but differences in views had maintained the tension between China and the US. For those reasons I believe that this new president will not be any different from the past presidents. What I think that he may be trying to achieve is more support and trust from Chinese citizens, and does not really care to release the growing tension between the two countries. He may just be going around as he has in order to keep us in our place, in order to keep us seperated and for us not to intervene in China's government. Hannah pd 9

  2. After reading this article it seems to me as though China and the US are off to a very good start in a relationship. Seeing all of the connections and adventures throughout Mr.Xi trip he seems to have really enjoyed his tour of the US which may make is mind set about the US a postive one. The article mentions how Mr.Xi has been very open with Joe Biden about China's political and economic dilemmas which shows me a sense of trust between the two individuals. Maybe this could foresight a very assuring relationship between these two countries as well. Another reason as to why I feel that the US and China will have a better relationship under Mr. Xi's rule is because based off of Mr. Biden and this article Mr. Xi has been perceived to be a very different leader who is willing to reveal himself to the American public. He appears to be someone who is very interested in American culture and life which is something very important in a strong tie between countries. Overall I definitely think that the US and China are able to form some great relationships under their new leader.

  3. I thought this article was very intresting because I didnt know about the leadership change. But i think that China is moving in the right direction. I think that the relationship that is to be established will become an even greater one because of this leaders openess and honesty. So in the end both the U.S. And China will benefit from future events to come

  4. Perhaps with Mr. Xi in charge, ties between the US and Chine WILL strengthen, however how long it lasts is altogether a different story. Other Chinese officials have shown distaste in his ways, and therefore we may not know how long Mr. Xi shall stay in charge.

  5. It is extremely important that the dominant superpower in the world, (USA), and a rising superpower, (China), have good relations not only for themselves but for the world's sake. Because both of these countries have such influential economies in the world market it is vital that they be somewhat allies instead of enemies. Clearly this trip by the VP of China and mostly future president was very positive in the future relations of these to powerful nations. I just hope this will continue to progress...

  6. I found it interesting that China's Vice President Xi Jinping was interested in many of the United States traditions. Although reading and swimming is common in both nations, he said he enjoys watching American basketball, baseball, and football. He visited many places, including a Lakers game, as well as confirming business deals between Chinese companies and DreamWorks animation as well as the American film company. Although US Vice President Joe Biden does not assume that his visitor’s openness might translate to policy-making. But he said that in their personal conversations, Mr. Xi “has been very frank about the economic and political dilemma he faces in China.” Jinping has been responsive, and US economical ties have steadily improved. However, there are differences not resolved that remain.

  7. The U.S. doesn't have a great relationship with China at the moment. But judging from Mr. Xi's actions, he wishes that would change. As vice president and future president of China, Mr. Xi is powerful in government. Mr. Xi probably wants the U.S. to see that China can be trusted and that China isn't what Americans believe it to be. Mr. Xi wants the United States and China to have a better relationship. Mr. Xi does this by showing the United States citizens that he isn't that different than them; he likes what Americans like. So in order to be on better terms with the U.S. Mr. Xi took a different approach than Hu Jintao. But Mr. Xi visit the U.S. was strictly business. Similar to a presidential campaign, Mr. Xi came to the U.S. to campaign that he is just like an American. And hopefully, Americans can see that so the U.S. believes that China and them are on the same side. So in the future, China can act knowing that the U.S. is on their side.

  8. Reading this article, Mr. Xi seems like a very likable person. He could relate with a wide range of people because of his personal background, hobbies and how he interacts with commoners.

  9. The tension between the US and China has been noticeably growing within the past few decades. Since we are both competing against each other for the limited positions of world super power, it is hard to imagine use ever (in the short term) getting along. With this said, I find it very surprising that Mr. Xi was so friendly on his visit to America. Rarely are Chinese officials this friendly to “commoners”. What surprised me even more was that he took the time to answer a high school student’s question—officials rarely ever even acknowledge children’s existence (I would know) let alone answer their questions. From reading this article I’ve grown pretty fond of Mr. Xi, despite the fact that he was caught in a possible “image-polishing” lie.

  10. It's great that we can see China's leadership in a different light. His unique attitude of friendliness and sense of humor set him aside from the other vice presidents of China in the past. Us seeing a unique vice president like him that really exposes himself to the American public gives us hope, especially with the tension that exists between all of the nations around the world. This small sign of hope is a start.

  11. Having a change in the leadership in China could mean that the U.S's relationship with China could become better, or there could even be cease to the conflict between us. If the leadership were to change the world could see a big change in the way that China handles its self. It would be nice to see a alliance with China, that way there is one less country that we would have to worry about.

  12. This article was interesting to read because I found it cool that the Chinese vice president was open with his opinions and actions with the American vice president. That reassures people like me that china and America are trying to make things work out. The Chinese vice president probably felt that because he felt welcomed which allowed him to be considerate with america

  13. This article is about a Chinese political figure visiting America to "polish" the view of China by Americans.
Although this seems like nothing but a honest cause, the author did throw in subtle words into the article to describe some minuscule doubts she had about the honesty of the visit. She called his "very scripted" visit and other examples...
Besides that, this article did not show much opinion at all. It kind of just said "he visited" and that was that. There was not much analyses about what this visit had affected, if anything at all.
In my opinion, this "polishing" did not do much, honestly.

  14. The Chinese Vice-President, Xi Jinping, seems like someone who is very interested in how America works and the culture & system America goes by. He is very involved with the citizens which isn't very common among politicians. "Mr. Xi buffed his regular-guy image on Friday with a visit to the International Studies Learning Center in the town of South Gate, Calif., just southeast of Los Angeles." He made the students laugh here and there which shows another side of the Vice President; he can have a good time but knows when to be serious. He tried to make the relationship with Washington better gaining more points for China's Vice-President who will be likely to follow the President of China at the moment. He tries anything to make economic reforms to improve China.

  15. I can tell that this man wishes to make great change to China for the better. That, he is very dedicated and his intentions or for the benefit of all, not just for a position in government. He said that he had been studying the political system on the United States which seemed to me like a good thought because our government is sculptured around giving all equal rights and equal say. Our government has not failed in the past and most citizens seem to be content with the way we run things. But I do agree with the main point of the closing statement in this article, that the visits may have just been a way to strengthen bonds with the US.

  16. What im getting from this article is that Mr. Xi, the vice president of China, is trying to relate to the public. He wants to make himself seem like not an intimidating leader, but like everyone else. But why go to the US? What is his purpose? Is it because he wants to soften the relationship and gain our trust? If so, what does he have to gain? I'm very confused..

  18. I felt this improved the Xi Jinping reaches out to Americans by portraying himself as a regular guy. I'm sure many americans must have felt skeptic about China's plans but I do think Jinping proved himself. But the question remains, What is the outcome of this visit? News agencies portrayed the visit in two different ways. The chinese news agency titled the visit as "Chinese vice-president's U.S. tour hailed as future-oriented landmark" where as The New York Times titled the visit as "Chinese Vice President Ends U.S. Tour on Friendly Note". Both were very opinianated.

  19. Why would he want to come here and portray himself the same as hu jintao. If theres one important thing about politics that he is definitely doing right, its preserving a positive image. Whether or not it is a real image, I don't think anyone can verify that. If he is lying, he is definitely doing a great job of it

  20. I think that Mr. Xi is making a very smart move. There is a lot of skepticism towards China from America. These days, there has been less anti-communism. Visiting America was a good political move. It shows how he is a human like everyone else. He reveals his hobbies, and likes and dislikes. This is a great move to help connect the east with the west. Mr. Xi may not been the strongest leader, but he shows a lot of charisma in visiting this classroom.

  21. I didn't really understand this article to some extents. But it seems to me this article is stressing on how China's leaders or teachers teach the native Chinese that America isn't that great... I really didn't understand this article...
