  1. First of all, I think there has to be a new word for pirate...because when I think of pirate I think of captain jack sparrow from "Pirates of the Caribbean." But more importantly in this article I believe that by the US saving those fisherman, it makes us look like the good guys and will definitely stir up what is already a very tense situation between the US and Iran. Perhaps people in Iran will see this as an act that shows that the US is good and that they should give the US what we want...or they can just think that the US is just trying to intervene in everything as usual.

  2. The US finally takes charge and tries to payback Iran for everything they've done; it's about time. They owe it to Iran and it's good that the people on the boat were saved.
    P.S. I didn't know Pirates were real.

  3. I'm sorry Mr. Kramer, I have no idea what you mean by "it pays to stay on the course". Is it having to do with the pirates?? The first thing I thought when I heard pirates in the article was those guys that look for treasure or that guy Johnny Depp plays. I have heard about how there are actual priates that actually go and take over a ship? But what purpose do they do this for? Do they work for a certain group? What is the point of holding a group of people on a boat hostage? Anyway, I thought this article was funny because once again the United States went and assisted the people of Iraq. Except in this case the Iraqians were openly overjoyed and grateful. I thought that this sort of showed that although the US is always butting into other countries' problems, we really do care for others. We always seem to help, in a way. And this instance really showcased that. Now if we could only help ourselves... ~ Hannah Pd 9

  4. I don't really know what there is to say about this article. No matter whos boat it was I think the destroyer would have saved whoever was on it. I think it is ironic that they were from Iran because they are the country the government is trying to declare war on at the moment.

  5. I think the hostages were really lucky because if U.S marines just happened to miss that boat then who knows how long the pirates could have held those people hostages. This also shows that if U.S didn't come into Iran then this mayhem would have been a whole lot worse.

  6. I'm laughing at the awkward position Iran is in
since the US saved their Iranian Sailors and Iran threatened to blocade the Strait of Hormuz. A question I have is, how did the pirates not hear the sailors speaking in Urdu to Ellinger? It'S amazing though what the power of language can do. And I am also pleased to tell you that the sailors were rescued by a US ship directed by a women, Ellinger. Overall, I'm happy that the sailors went back to their homes.

  7. I think when reading this article pirates threw many people off. But yes pirates are real but arent everything they are portrayed to be in movies. But this article is very significant in history through all the recent events that have been occuring between Iran and the U.S. Iran always had a bad persepective of the U.S. but the act in this article proved otherwise. It causes the people of Iran to take a new look on the U.S. and makes the U.S. look especially good in this situation

  8. When I first read this article, I actually had to search the word pirate in the dictionary. I thought pirates were gone many many years ago, and found it pretty shocking that they still existed. Even though there were issues between the USA and iran, I think it was the right thing to do to save them from the pirates. After all this saving thing, maybe we will have a better relationship with Iran now, that we saved their people. ___ Elizabeth period 9

  9. Although the US is known for intervening often with other countries, it was a much needed assist in this case. The Iranian fishermen saw the Americans as people sent from God, as they were held hostage with limited food and water as well as being used as forced labor by the pirates. The American sailors that rescued these fishermen state that it is only part of the job to save lives out at sea, and would do it for any country. Even though it wasn't intended, this does make the Americans look like a "hero" figure and that they are good after all.

  10. Pirates? What. The last time I checked pirates were in movies with huge sail boats and angry fisherman. Besides the confusing fact of a so called Pirate this article has made our country look extremely good and heroic. This article clearly shows how grateful these Iranian fishermen were after being rescued, the description of their treatment under the watch of the Somali was very harsh and unfair so I am glad that they are rescued. I also feel as though this article was a bit confusing because it never described why the Somali captured the fisherman and what the point of holing the fishermen hostage was for? Overall I think that it was a good idea for our country to step in and help out Iraq. -Nikita F.

  11. It's ironic how not so long ago Iran was threatening the United States that they were going to close down the Strait cutting off the oil supply to the U.S. And now when the U.S. saved Iranians from pirates which Iran was extremely grateful for. As for the "pirates," I didn't think they truly existed. Pirates sound like something that came out of Petter Pan or Pirates of the Caribbean. What purpose would these pirates have for kidnapping a bunch of people and forcing them to do their bidding? It's funny because that's exactly what pirates do, but I never would have though they really exist. At least the U.S. took initiative to help the people in Iran and maybe this will mean Iran owes the U.S. in the sense of their loyalty to an extent.

  12. Pirate situations seem to be spiraling out of control. First there are run in with those barbaric Somalia pirates, now these Middle Eastern pirates. There has to be a way to prevent piracy from gaining further power. I think it was really noble of the US to save these Iranians. Seeing as to the situation we are currently in with Iran (our relations are rocky), it was a really nice gesture for the US to save these pirate—on top of that, when it really comes down to life and death, it is only humane for people to save someone in when you see them in need. It can’t be right to just ignore a person in need, so although this is a touching story on the US’s behalf,I believe (or try to believe) that many other countries would do the same if put in the situation.

  13. Basically what this article is about is U.S. marines saving Iranian men being held at sea by pirates. This situation is a little strange because of all the hostilities that Iran is creating, with the whole situation on oil exports.
This was a situation where some men saved other men because that was the right thing to do, there was no nationality stopping that, or race, or gender... etc. Just a good, pure, humanitarian act.
Often it seems like the world is too focused on either themselves of their particular group of people to realize we're all human and should be helping each other out instead of fighting it out for more for ourselves.

  14. I thought that the United States saving the 15 Iranian fishermen was very good for th U.S. It put us in a good position with Iran. Like the article said, it put Iran in an awkward spot. Although there was much tension between America and Iran, America decided to still help save Iranian people, showing Iran that America is not so bad of a country. Also, the commander of the ship helped boost the way America looked by saying that they would do it for any country. I believe that America saving the fishermen really helped boost the way America is viewed, and it could help with relations between Iran and America.

  15. When I first read the title, I was confused. In my head, I thought, "Pirates are real??" I mean, yeah, I've heard of pirates, but i didn't think they actually existed. My definition of a pirate was, like everyone else's, Jack Sparrow. Do they actually go around trying to take over ships? What's the purpose of that? I picked up a little about how the pirates used the Iranian-flagged Mulahi as a “mother ship” in further raids. But still, what is their goal for taking sailors hostage? And also, i think it was very heroic of the US sailors to save the 13 Iranians. “One of our obligations as mariners out here is to save lives at sea,” the admiral said. “We’d do that for any country in the world.” I think it really changed Iran's viewpoint of the US. Hopefully, this will put us on better terms.

  16. When I first saw "pirate" I thought of your typical "scallywag" sailing around the ocean, trying to hoard treasures. It seems like there's more than one definition of pirate. However, it's good that the US saved those fishermen, because it wouldn't be right to leave those 13 Iranian fisherman and 15 pirates stranded there, after they sent out a distress signal. We may be different countries with different beliefs, but we owed them as a human being to save their lives. We made the right decision.

  17. Hopefully tensions with other nations and Iran will ease because we saved these Iranians from the oblivious. Referring to the code of marines, i think it was a duty for us to intercept that signal and save those Iranians but we should be seen as something more than that. In this act of courage that our vessel showcased by saving those Iranians, i think other countries should not just see us as a greedy and pretentious country, but also as a symbol of safety towards all (even in other countries) I strongly believe that this event that has occurred, should help us build our alliances with other countries. Overall, i think our country should continue to re-build its economic and other issues that still stand in our way. XXX

  18. Having the U.S helping Iranian vessels will help loosen the tension in the area. This shows that the U.S. is willing to help but the feelings have to be mutual as well as Iran retracting their statement to close the Straight of Hermuz. This is a good thing for the world because it shows that there may be room for help but aslong as Iranian officals are willing to be helped.

  19. Pirates are not the navy hence they aren’t authorized to arrest or hold prisoner, trespassing ships. This wasn’t the American sailors’ fault; it was unlawful by the pirates. The sea isn’t owned by anyone; so this is just a useless fight. The Americans did not pose any type of threat to the Iranians. But I do not understand why the Iranians were ready to surrender. –krupa p. world 10 pd. 9

  20. It's rather interesting to read about pirates after watching tons of horrible, cliche, degrading depictions Hollywood has shown us. On a more serious note, I wonder what the destroyer USS Kidd would have done had we still been in war with Iran. Intriguing how much relationship with other countries affects what happens in this world. It just goes to show how easily controlled we are, to just go with the flow wherever it may take us. I sometimes even wonder if we have plans for our futures. Surely not, if we continue to engage in war after war after war.

  21. Somalian pirates are scary. I would hate to be in the position of the Iranian fisherman. I would be downright terrified. Glad that USA rescued those pirates. Maybe this would ease the tensions between USA and Iran temporarily.

  22. Hey Guys, I'm the USA. While we have soldiers in Iran, let us save their navy to confuse the general public of what we see of Iran! Even if the navy commander says that this was just routine work, I feel like its a contradiction of what the U.S is doing. But I suppose in the end, it's just a good act of kindness. It's nice to know that even in hostile times we still help each other now and then.

  23. The situation with the pirates was a very scary thing. Being an iranian on the boat i would want anyone to help me even if it was the u.s . The u.s and iran were not in good terms but i think the u.s. helped them because they were just trying to be nice- samir licul

  24. I think it was nice of the US to save the Iranians from the Pirates because they are in the middle of a tense situation. Since the Iranians were greatful to be saved they should do something nice to the US, especially since it wasnt the first time Iranians had been rescued at sea by American sailors.
