Young Men Suffer Worst as Economy Staggers

This article in the Wall Street Journal this week highlights what we discussed in class. Here some more insight to the issue.

  1. This article demonstrates the ways in which the labor market is kind of scary and has become an increasingly trying place for potential workers. Jobs like construction are disappearing, and those requiring intellect and college degrees are demanding workers. Preston was able to enjoy the perks of hand-labor jobs until the recession, which completely disturbed the balance of what he was used to. It is fascinating how quickly and significantly demands can change. Also, it was interesting to see how, in Preston’s mother’s generation, men were able to work blue-collar jobs high-paying enough to provide for a household. That is sadly no longer viable. It really must be a shock to young workers, who need to find a completely new path or just survive on minimum wage. The housing boom was a time of prosperity for even those without much skill, but now they are going through a painful reality check on life. This is why finding a job with stability in the long run is key to a good future, and that is what high school students like me should be thinking about before entering the job market.

  2. It seems as though times have become a lot harder. In older generations people could get away with less education than today. It seems that people now a days need an education and a lot more of it. The minimum wage standard can no longer support workers in this day and age. The price of living has increased greatly over the past decade. The living wage should be implemented because it keeps up to date with the current trend of the economy and will help people like Mr.Randol.People have to resort living with their parents or with a bunch of room mates. They cannot start a family if they are not stable themselves. Mr.Preston's marriage to his girl friend could not last the bad economy. It is very difficult, especially in this modern times.

  3. In my opinion it's sad to see how this has completely effected the lives of people who once were "living". This young man, who was living a pretty good life with a high paying job, and an excessive amount of overtime added to it. He decided that he wanted to grow up, and therefore marry his girlfriend. He was able to give them both a pretty good life, until things began to change. His life went from that of a good one, to a live in which everything turned against him. It's sad how the lives of people are being effected because of this. This is becoming a really serious issue, things are getting worse as the unemployment percentage goes up. It makes me stop and think of how things were very prosperous until finally times began to get tough.
I am also seeing how we are shifting towards a more conservative way instead of spending money on leisure. I think it's interesting how we are sort of learning from our mistakes, but how long can it last? There are always going to be times where we need to spend, and we can not always be saving, so I find it pretty interesting how things are starting to change. And this was only a few years ago, this is also something to think about.

  4. Mr. Preston and Mr. Randol are perfect representations of the "unemployable man." I was not surprised by the circumstances that the two found themselves in after they were hit by the recession because they both are not college educated. The article really put in perspective how pertinent it is nowadays to receive a good, solid college education. It was clear how both Preston and Randol have to now make sacrifices to be able to make a living and just scrape by. Randol, for example, admitted that he can no longer indulge in long hours playing Call of Duty. Preston's personal life was affected since the strain of losing his job contributed to him getting a divorce and moving back in with his parents. I think to avoid having a future generation full of disillusioned and pessimistic young adults who are "unemployable," it is of utmost importance that we better the education system in America and ensure that everyone can receive affordable, quality education.

  5. I am not surprised to read about this information in the article. After reading about "The Unemployable Man" in class, it has started to hit me more and more that the less education you have, the less likely you are to find a job. Even though I know that I will go to college, it still makes me think about how much different my life could be without going. I was shocked though to read about the percentages of people living back at home with their parents.

  6. I think that the obvious way to try to prevent falling into the gorwing number of the unemployed is to simply get the highest level of education taht is possible. The uneducated are closely related to the unemployed. In today's wortld, the demand for labor is based upon those that can fill a white collar job more than a blue collar job. White collar jobs require an education and degree of some sort. I think that the best way to try to stay above unemplyemtn is to be as qualified for any job as possoble.

  7. This article epitomizes how devastating the economic crisis is to people in the United States. This article particularly focuses on the impact the economy has had on younger men. It is shocking to read the statistics provided in this article about how many young men are unemployed today, compared to the statistics four years ago. It is unfortunate that people that are very skilled like Mr. Preston in the article, are very skilled, and can’t find a job. This article also shows the impact on these individuals’ family and friends, because these individuals. This impact is that these people must live with their parents, or friends, and therefore provide for their shelter and food as they are helped to get out of their debt. This article shows that the economic crisis is truly devastating and it has many unfortunate and devastating impacts on the people of the United States of America including the many different way in which people save up to try and meet monthly rent, or different ways that these people are jus trying to “survive,” as one of the individuals in the article stated.

  9. Clearly our economy has fallen from past years. It's difficult hearing all these stories about men who graduated from high school or college, who cannot get a good, well paying job. It is not only ruining the men's lives, but it's also making our economy crash even more. I believe to pick up our economy, we need to get the money circulating around the country. Consumers and sellers both need money to get what they need and if everyone keeps circulating that process, it will benefit us. Not everyone has the advantage of living back at home with their parents, so there should be a change immediately even though we've been trying for years. Clearly there is something major wrong and it's not going to get better until someone finds the problem and solves it.

  10. Many young men are currently struggling to find a job. People without college degrees have less opportunites to find a job than people with college degrees. Many of the jobs that don't require college degrees are unavailable and of the few jobs that are available, most pay minimal wage. Many of these young men can't even afford housing and are forced to live with their parents. Unless the economy improves, these people will continue to struggle.

  11. The economy today holds a huge role in the unemployment rate today. There has been a huge spike in the percent of unemployed men from ages 25-34. Since the economy is so awful, no one is spending any money and as a result companies are failing to earn any money. When companies don't earn money, they cannot afford to pay all of their workers so companies have to let go of some of their workers, maybe even some of their very best. It's shocking to see that so many young men with high school and college degrees are subjected to living with their parents because they are unable to pay off their bills and a house. With a college degree, I would have assumed it would be quiet easy to find a skilled job that pays a decent amount of money but surprisingly there aren't many jobs available. Since these men cannot find a descent paying job it's ruining their social lives. Unable to pay for a house, a young man will struggle to raise a family or even pay for their own necessities. Also, these young men are just that, young. They are the future of the economy, If these young people are having trouble finding a job, with a college degree, the economy, doubtfully will get any better. In fact the economy may become even more awful than it is now.

  12. After reading this, I found it to be really depressing how this economy is having an effect on everyone. It may be because we are in the middle class but what I mainly hear people complaining about is how they cannot buy a new phone every few months now since the economy is bad. In my point of view, I have not seen much change from when the economy was okay and how it is now. I feel like the middle class may be exaggerating to a certain point. It may just be the people around me but I have not seen much change in how we spend money since the economy has gone down. Parents may be more careful on how much they spend on unnecessary items but compared to these young men in this article, I believe we do not have anything to complain about. Mr. Preston and Mr. Randol both worked in construction and were paid $14 an hour with a lot of overtime pay. Now they are struggling to find a full time job that pays as well in their opinion. I am still a bit unclear on who has to splurge more money in order to get the economy going again but if the upper and middle class make much more money per hour they are working then we should try to. It seems as if we have really just become survival of the fittest. As a nation we should try to support each other, even if it means to take a risk and spend money. I n my opinion, the upper class should spend more money in order to get the economy going. There are many unemployed men out there who need to support families. In comparison to what the upper class citizens make per hour people like Mr. Preston & Mr. Randol’s wages are like money they may throw into the wash without knowing. Even if the upper class were to spend money, it would not be so much that it were to make them poor but enough to start up the economy. From there I think the middle class could also start to spend money and the economy would become better to provide jobs for males 25 – 34 without jobs and relying on their parents at such an old age. ~Hannah Lee Pd 09 ♥

  13. Our economy in the past few years has really hit rock bottom. It honestly is really sad seeing people with a great education and a high school deploma, and not being able to get any sort of job to raise a family and a house. Also it sticks that people who had a lot of money and were able to buy big screen TV's and fancy things, now are suffering because of the economny falling and can't afford to have these fancy things anymore. It really is a shame that nobody has been able to help this problem even a little bit, because a lot of people are suffering and need help, and they could not be provided with help! Maybe all these young kids who can't get jobs, and have no money will start to see that this is a problem and will go out, help, and do somethin about this crisis!

Many people are struggling to find jobs. people with college degrees have a better chance of getting a job then the people without one because they went to college and spent 2-4 years if not more to learn about the job they want to do. If someone doesnt step up and fix the economy i feel the United States will be in a lot of trouble and will not have enough jobs for the people of the United States, and this will lead to more debt and homeless people. 18. Many well paid jobs now require a college education, since the unemployment rate dramatically increased and the population is constantly increasing in the US, those who have a college education now have a much higher priority for high paying jobs than those who do not. Those who do not have a college education have hard times finding jobs now and must turn to minimum wage or close to minimum wage jobs, but the graph from the article shows that jobs are slowly recovering (Total U.S. nonfarm jobs added or lost).

  19. It is becoming harder and harder to find a job because a lot of jobs now require you to have a certain degree. People who dont have that degree will sometimes not even be considered for a job, and the job will be given to someone who has that degree, even if the other person has more experience or better qualifications for the job. Its becoming more and more common to see people lose their job not because of their work ethics but because the company just doesnt have the funds to keep them around. I think that something needs to be done to help the economy and help people get jobs quickly.

After reading this article, I realized that the only way to get a real job in this world is to get a really good education. Both of them had really high hopes for themselves and unfortuanately it didn’t work out. It’s really sad how Preston wanted to travel and Randol wanted extravagant things such as a 63 inch television and a50-gallon fish tank and they both ended up with barely anything and living back home with their parents. The men’s personal lives were also affected by the economy. The article really shows what many people are going through in this economy. Even though, I am going to college and will get a job, it makes me wonder that it might be harder to get a job with this kind of economy.

Since majority of this population is the younger generation, more and more young men struggle to find the job to suit for only one person when many were probably interviewed. If people who don't go to college have much more of a difficulty to find a decent job to support you life. Since the economy is not doing so well, even people who graduated out of college with a good degree still, has difficulty of getting a job. After reading this article it hit me that so many people are suffering out there right now, and as high school students we cannot take for granted the education we have and we must use our resources and work hard. In today's society it is very hard to get a job in general with or without a college degree because of the economic recession we are in. No changes are occuring rapidly and people are struggling to survive. The life of this man went down the drain,he was once living a successful life and was happy and now he is struggling to get by. This just goes to show that none of us want to be in that kind of situation and we must not let oppurtunities pass us by. Even if there are jobs available, only the most qualified people can attain those jobs. This scares me even more because even if i go to college, I may not even get a job. The young man in the article had stable job with installing granite counters where he married his girl friend and had enough money to have vacations and buy what they wanted. After the house bust, he lost his job, his marriage was broken and he had to live with his parents. It is becoming more of a trend because people right out of high school and college have a large amount of debt. However, there is no way to pay it. Without a way to pay for it, the future will be bleak because if you-can not support yourself how can you support others like a wife or kids. Hopefully, the future look better than the present.

  29. After seeing the video & reading the article, it really was no surprise to me that a man without a degree can't get a job now-a-days. Back then, a degree wasn't necessary and a person who drops out of high school, let's say, can be a CEO of a business. However, because of the economic struggles US is facing, Preston cannot obtain a job. Like he said, the people will obviously chose the people who had been there for awhile or had more experience, because it's less work for them and they ca give them less money, for providing them loyalty. It really is amazing how it wasn't that hard to find a job a few years ago, but then suddenly, I find more & more people out of jobs or struggling to find a job because of this economic issue we are dealing with.

Education is one of the most important aspects in insuring a stable future for your self. Now, even having a quality education won’t guarantee you a set future. Our economy has slowed down to the point where the old are retiring later and later, this means that there are fewer and fewer job openings for the young. It is going to be very hard to get our economy back on its feet again, judging by the current scenario. Jobs are getting harder to find, and with much of the population unemployed, our economic stability is really challenged. These are turbulent times and unless our economy somehow gets back on its feet, the unemployment rate is only going to get worse. It is a downwards spiral.
