Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness

So, what do you think? Should we have laws against this? Why or why not?

I Personally find that a child at the age of ten years old could walk home, play outside, and be independent without any parental supervision. A six year old should be supervised due to dangers in the kitchen and other issues with being home alone. Parents should not have the government tell them how to raise children because everyone is unique in their own way, but if a child is put in a dangerous situation it could be understandable to step in. I find that its really up to parents for putting trust in their kids so I agree more with the parents raising their own kids and not ACS.

I think that parents, whenever possible, should bring their kids home from school, because there are many dangers on the way, such as sex offenders and busy traffic

i think there should not be laws against kids being unsuppervised when they leave the house because kids need to be free to become responsible and capable to live as an adult in the world

  4. This should be against the law because there can be a child molester following kids ages 6 to 10 home and it puts them in a lot of danger.

  5. P1 DK. Sb - I think that there shouldn't be a law against it as long as they can walk home with somebody either someone older or a guardian like a babysitter

I feel that there should not be laws against letting children walk home alone from school. There could be many reasons why parents are having their kids walk home from school, and I am sure that if the kids were in danger, the parents would not let the kids walk home. Sure, there is always a risk, but there is a risk with almost everything, but I feel that kids should be taught at a young age to be independent.

I totally get what the parents are saying about giving their children their space. But I think that comes with time. Little by little they should be introduced to different experiences; but at such a young age of 6 is a little to extreme

  8. Ang pd1 I think that kids should be able to walk home alone when they are responsible enough and mature enough to be left unattended by a parent.

  9. Period 1 LH I believe we should not have rules for this. I've been walking home for years and it should be the parents decision how they want their kids raised

I think that the government should stay out of this family's business. The parents should be able to raise there children however they want to as long as they aren't putting the children in life threatening danger..Walking home from school is good for a child to have responsibilities from a young age.

  11. I feel that the parents were doing a good job raising the kids. In the past two decades, there has been controversy with this because of child predators. In recent days, the stories of child abductions have decreased and there have been less cases.

Instead of penalizing the children’s growth, children should learn about being street smart. In other countries, it seems that they are less over protective of their youth and let children become human.

America restricts our youth. We have no privacy. Sure, we have it better than most countries. But we need to let children grow up and become adults with a sense of world around them. Overall, I think that there should be a law that lets children walk on two feet instead of four feet.-S.D.

  12. P2 dk A parent’s decision on how to raise their child is completely their own. Now, there are people incapable of parenting and those who have their children taken from them because of poor parenting. However, laws regarding child-rearing are there for the safety of the child and parent in general. The minute details of this are completely up to adults.
In this case, this is nothing I haven’t heard of. My step-sister has been taking the bus home from school since she started middle school. Noticing this news clip is from Denver, I cannot imagine a world in which children of that age aren’t allowed to walk home by themselves. Constantly I see children no younger than 8 or 9 walking home by themselves. As the mother in this case said, she is letting her children grow up without restrictions that may push them to make bad choices as they reach adolescence.
In short: This mother is raising her children properly- in a modern and safe way. It’s nothing that we in New York don’t see everyday.

  13. This is absolutely ridiculous, I don't even think that's legal to ban something like that. If the parents are concerned, they can take action.

I think that the parents of these two children were very negligent as to letting their young kids walk alone on the street. Two young children should be supervised always while in public. These parents opened their kids up great danger and deserve the legal consequences that come with it

A parent should be free to implement their style of parenting as they see best fit for their children. In this case particularly, the law is playing an overbearing role in the families life. They should not be restricted on the freedoms they allow their children, however I understand some concerned parents perspectives as to why this can be dangerous with a six-year-old child.

If this is truly breaking a child neglect law, is there anyone being neglected? There do need to exist laws about neglect, but neglect is not walking home by oneself.

well... ever parent has different opinions, and different ways to how they want to raise there kids, some parents let there kids walk home at a young age, others don't. the ones that don't let there kids walk home have a reason just like the ones that let there kids walk home, but there should be supervision for younger kids as a parent you should know better then to let 6 years old walk alone that's the parents fault 6 years old is not that responsible, smart and is to young to understand most thing but everything comes with a risk. the idea to ban waking home is just...... dumb
