Undaunted by Arrests.....

Freedom of speech is essential to enlightened ideals. See how it has become a flashpoint in Russia since the government sent the members of a young punk-rock band to jail over a recent performance.

  1. Reading this made me really angry. Like i feel so bad for Russia and how they dont have many rights to their speach. Like here in the states we can say or sing or write what we please and we wont get penelized for what we say. It's not fair and I feel like RUssia needs to be more lose with this.

I think it's kind of stupid to lock up a band that was just expressing their opinions, but I get why I mean they did go a little bit overboard with the disembodied manaquin heads. But they really shouldn't be arresting a band because they were making fun of the president or whatever, i mean seriously who does that!

  3. While I was reading the article, I realized how much different American is to Russia. Had a similar song been made by an American band criticizing the American government, it may have gotten mild publicity. Here in America, we take our Bill of Rights for granted. One such right is the Freedom of Speech. We can say anything we want about the government without getting penalized. This article reminds me that outside of America, many countries do not have this type of freedom. I was also surprised to see many Communists joining in on the protests. They knew what was right in this situation, and stood up for it. Overall, the article was a wake up call for me that what we here in America take for granted, may not be there for people of other countries. Here, we can say and stand up for what we believe is right. In Russia, whatever the government believes in is right. It is unfortunate that the band was arrested for standing up for themselves and their people.

  4. It is surely wrongful action by President Putin to arrest Pussy Riot. This band are given the natural rights and human rights that cannot be denied by anybody, much less government. One must be given rights to express his/her opinion freely without government interference and this idea is strongly suggested by the enlightenment thinkers, such as John Locke. He firmly believed that it is the government's obligation to protect people and their rights, and should they violate such duty, the people may, and must, overthrow the government to replace it with another.

  5. After the protests this past year against dictators in countries including Egypt and Libya, it isn't surprising to see how strong the protestors against Putin in Russia have become. They have a source of encouragement from the successes of these proximate countries and they now have a lack in fear of punishment which is a great advantage. Current dictators in other countries around the world have to be wary of the threat of protest. To prevent future protests, these dictators will have to be meticulous with the decisions they make and in how they appeal to their citizens.

  6. SK prd. 9: There are countries all around the world that don’t know freedom like we do. We should consider ourselves lucky to live in a country where we have so many freedoms that we often take for granted. Our government is designed where all people are empowered, while others, like Russia, seem to be designed with only the upper class in power. I think governments around the world should learn to compromise and allow greater communication to take place instead of unjustly enforcing harsh laws like random imprisonment for songs that criticize the government. In my opinion, a society is never perfect because you can never make everyone completely happy, but letting people have greater representation is the key. In Moscow I think the government needs to take more positive action and listen to the people. They are only giving their opinions of what they believe in. The government is punishing them instead of helping. People deserve to have a strong government that is looking out for them.

  7. I think that this article shows the meaning and values of freedom of speech as well as aspects of many ideals of humanity that our society has learned to forget and not accept. Like mentioned in the song "Where is the Love" by BEP, us humans including the dominant political parties and individuals in Russia, are not aware of the true meaning of freedom and the true values we were once taught to execute, by our founding fathers, written in the documents, the values that matter the most, LIFE, LIBERTY, and the PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS.

After reading this article, I was shocked. In today’s day and age, I couldn’t believe stuff like this was still going on. I was shocked that the band Pussy Riot (prosecuted for singing an anti-Putin song in a cathedral) was put in jail for two years. Being in America and having freedom of speech, makes this surprising. As Americans we have become so used to having the right to express ourselves; and not having that just seems unreal to us. We take it for granted. One thing that caught my attention while reading this article was the fact that the protests have been going on for nine months. When I first started reading this article, I thought these protests were just occurring. But then finding out that they’ve been going on so long, definitely got me interested. In the article it says, "Over all, nine months after the first large protests sent shock waves through Moscow..." I thought that with all the protesting going on, the government and Putin might have tried to reason or come to an agreement with them. After all the protests were going on for nine whole months. One would think that the government would have tried to resolve this. One thing that I liked about the article was reading about the protesters persistence. I enjoyed finding out that the citizens of Russian weren’t giving up yet. I’m excited that the people aren’t giving in to the government.

  9. I am very surprised at what people are capable of doing when they are set on something. The Russian people were not afraid to express their feelings and their ideas on the topic. This is a very important topic. The idea of freedom of speech should not be denied to anyone. What this young punk-rock band did was open the public's eye to important news and ideas that they weren't fully aware about. This group wanted to tell the public the things that government usually hides from them. Information that is usually hidden and not released to the public. The fact that Putin punished this punk-rock band for expressing their opinions, gives the people of Russia a sense that their freedom of speech is very limited. Now that they realize this, they are now fighting for the right to freedom of speech. Without the cost of going to jail.

  10. I don’t feel that it was right to put any anti-government protestors in jail unless they break the laws or become violent. Everyone is entitled to the freedom of speech, and the protestors are aloud to use their anti-government “voice”. No one should ever be punished or put in jail simply for non violently expressions their ideas and fighting for their freedom. The government’s reaction to this situation just made the problem worse because instead of trying to work with the protestors they are just trying to shut them down. In the article, it stated that in the latest protest members of the Communist party participated; this should really send a very powerful message to the government.

  11. The protest was not only on the favor of the people but it was also right as Putin had been in this situation once before, when 100,000 people protested against him before; but it was not a big deal. He took some bad steps which he didn't regret taking even though people in Russia were against him. But this time it is serious and the people of Russia are right as they should be given the right to vote again for the right person as they thought Putin was not a good president. But as he has the power of the President he might try to do somthing to save his post, but i don't think it will help.

I find this article to be mildly entertaining. Honestly I feel that the president of Russia can't handle any criticism. To the best it's probably what most people think about him and it's just teasing. I find it pathetic.

  13. It amazes me to read an article such as this one. I believe that as Americans, we are extremely lucky as citizens to have the luxury of rights that Communist countries like Russia do not. I believe that the mere fact that the citizens of Russia do not have the rights that they should be given is a clear indicator as to why they are protesting. In regards to the member of Parlaiment protesting as well, it is extremely brave of him to go out there and protest with the people, because it put him at risk of losing his job, and ultimately did lose it. It takes a lot of courage, as citizens of a Communist country, to protest- and I commend them. No citizens of any coutnry should have to go through the things that the Russians did. I believe that it is crucial to make a change in Russia's government, for the better of the people.

  14. I found it interesting how the article at one point noted that using law enforcement and courts to stop the protests was a poor strategic choice. While meant to curb the protests, this is a time in Russia where people are looking towards freedoms and rights contrary to such tactics, instead causing such tactics to sometimes fan the flames of anger and lower its effectiveness.

This article helps remind us that not every place in the world is like America. For example, the punk rock band in Russia was jailed due to voicing their opinion of their leader. In America, this would never happen. So, I think this article helps deepen my appreciation for the rights that I have.

Also, I found it interesting how Aleksei Navalny described protesting as if it is a duty, rather than a right. I think this is an extremely intriguing comment because it really shows that if people want change, they must make this change. And that having the ability to voice your opinion shouldn’t just be thought of as a right, but it should be a right that is practiced often. This article talks about how some people of Russia are unhappy with their government, and how they are using their ability to protest to (hopefully) make these changes.

  16. the Russians are filing this protest in order to voice themselves to Putin who is a DICTATOR, they are hoping they can somehow overthrow him or at least get him to change the way Russia is Run.This protest is the one thing Putin tried to prevent at the beginning of his rule. And his intentions were to eliminate his main opposing party. There are soldiers all around Russia who use force to end all protests by anti Putin protesters. Being a communist dictator there is very people can do besides protest in order to see change in Russia. I cannot relate this to myself because growing up in America and having these given rights and voice make it impossible to understand how hard it is for the Russians to get what they want. We should be thankful we are a democracy and are leader represents the people

  17. Many people who were fighting for their justice were sent to prison. Last month, the members of the Pussy Riot, were prosecuted for singing an anti-Putin song in a cathedral, but during the protest, this band appeared on buttons and balloons. I completely agree with the people that are saying that if they go to work, to provide for their families then they should attend these protests to provide freedom to themselves and their children. They treat this as if it is their job to protest. It was interesting how many demonstrators targeted Putin by using creative outfits signs. I think that it is really important for the people to defend the rights that we are being deprived of.

  19. I think this shows that we take freedom of speech for granted and often do not realize that a lot of other countries do not have it. The good part is that there are thousands of people who are protesting and fighting to attain that right. I like the fact that they are sticking up for that band even though the article does not say why that band was put in jail.

  20. I believe that Russia's government is making a huge mistake by ruling through fear. The entire idea of government is to rule for the people, to express their opinions and ideas in the laws and principles of society. Instead of providing freedom of speech and equality between the rich and poor, the government of Russia is arresting the rioters and shutting them down through fear instead. Now, many residents of Russia who disagree with many of the governments choices, such as no freedom of speech, are terrified to speak up and express themselves in fear of being locked up in jail for years on end. The entire concept of enlightenment is expressing the ideas of the PEOPLE, not of the few people ruling in government. A country is made up of its entire population, therefore everyone in that population deserves to speak out about their opinion. -M.B

  21. This article shows the opposite of enlightenment for many reasons. First of all there is no freedom of speech, or freedom of expression in Russia. Arresting the people was wrong because they were just expressing their opinions about the russian society/ government.

I find that the article relates a lot to the themes and ideas that we have been discussing in class. We see this country, where Democracy is promised, but tyranny is in control, where a music group goes to jail for saying something against the government. As Americans, something should go off for us when we here this. We have so many freedoms and rights, that we completely take advantage of, and it takes Tiananmen square or something like this for us to realize that. As we read earlier this month, if we don;t value and protect our freedom, we will lose. So i say it is our duty, not only as Americans but as people, to stand up for the justice and rights we all deserve not only here, but we should support the people of countries like this.

  23. I think that it is good that they are fighting for freedom of speech and that the USA should support them, however we shouldn't get involved with the fighting because it is not something of our business, unless they ask us to help them fight for rights. - Michelle Lim pd 9

  24. Chirag Soni World History 9- I think that these riots are something new brave that the people of under the rule of Russia are doing. I think it is also a little to harsh to send a band to jail for their performance and this displays censorship. This standup from the people puts Russia and Putin in a weak postion. This riot is good because the people are standing up for the rights they want and the rights that many of us think they deserve. This change will have a great affect on the changes in the world because it will cause in a big government change.

  25. M. Savani- PD9 World10- After reading this article, I realize what a great impact Enlightned values of freedom, equality, and happiness have on people all around the world, and even though many countries have tried to accept and abide these virtues, there's still much work to be done. Russia has just recently switched from a Communist country to a Capitalist one,but even with the drastic changes in laws and government, Communuist values and characteristics are still very evident in Russia. The president, Vladmir putin, is like an absolute ruler, taking power for himself, and in a communist society, the ruler of the nation does tend to get a tremendous amount of power. Even today, in 2012, in places like Europe and America where Enlightned values are assumed to be promoted, it's difficult to actually enforce these rules to a full scale and get ruler to give up power and hand it over to the people. Even though these virtues were thought up of 300 years ago, they're still relatively new, for most nations don't necessairy accept it, and the movement to getting the whole world Enlightned is still in it's starting stages. Acts like censorship by the government suggest that true freedom and equality are still goals that our world has yet to start reaching, and this arrest against anti Putin supporters exemplifies just that.

  26. I think that it was stupid of the government to arrest the band. The band wouldn't have gotten much attention if they weren't attested, and everybody would have probably forgot about them after a while.
I like that they said that protesting for your rights, is like going to work. I don't think most people in America see protests as work. They might agree with the protesters, but they won't actually join .
The only thing that I couldn't understand is why were there protesters with red ribbons. Historically, communism has never worked in any large society. You can not have a large society ruled by the working class. There will always be people who have more power and luxuries than others. The idea of communism is good, but I don't think humans are able to use it properly.

After reading this article, I felt as if the title doesn't really fit the situation of the protests that are happening in Russia. 'Undaunted by Arrests' claims that even as many are arrested for protesting against Putin, the spirit of the people still goes on to continue protesting. As seen from the article, the number of protestors have decreased due to these arrests, as many are looking out for themselves and their family. Another thing mentioned in the article was that there are two types of protestors, white (supporting trade unions and caps on utility payments) and red (supporting equality and justice). This made me wonder if these people would stop protesting if Putin gave in to the peoples' comments and changed the government system slightly more to their liking. It is possible that these protests won't stop even if Putin chooses to reform it slightly, until the entire government system is reformed as seen in the eyes of the people of Russia, but I don't see that happening at all. Most likely government officials will arrest more people, causing the number of protestors to decrease even more.
