Hobbies That Add Up To a Career

I love stories that show the variety of paths that can lie ahead in life. Here's a quick one that you may find interesting. At least it is optimistic which will be a nice change if you are reading this back to back with the shooting article.

I'm glad I took your advice and read this article second because this article was very enlightening and inspirational. I truly believe I am going to be a bilingual therapist when I get older and my passion has always been to help people, so I believe it is most important to major in what you are passionate about. From this article, I realized that a person can gain wealth in many ways and sometimes wealth does not equal money, but happiness and joy that comes with one's life every day. Life is too short to be concerned about the next test grade and I wish we would spend more time on the truly important aspects of life, such as family, friends, and hobbies we possess. All in all, this article opened up my eyes to realize that life is more than just a number in my bank account, life is about attaining goals, never giving up, and enjoying every second I live.

  2. I find it very intresting that he has many diffrent skills and he can use them for many diffrent jobs that he has. I think it is very important to have a job that you like to do, if you didnt you would be very bored and you couldnt wait to go back home and relax. Since I have yet to find out what skills I have and what I want to be doing with my life, he mad me realize that i should be looking for things I want to be doing instead of something I wouldnt like to do. I also talked to Mr.Kramer about my situation and he also insites that I should be looking for a job that I would like to do and to also explore diffrent subjects when I enter college.

  3. I find this article extremely interesting and inspiring. When we are kids, we talk about being superheroes and artists and then are told to be realistic so that every kid decides that they want to be a lawyer, a doctor, or a teacher. It isn't until we are about to make the official decision that we are told to do what we love or are interested in, but this is almost too late. By this point, we are brainwashed into thinking that there aren't many options except for the typical ones we learn about in elementary. It then takes someone extremely brave to look at these jobs and say that he or she is going to do what they love and make that their job. Instead of making an undesirable choice, they create jobs out of everything they love such as the man in this article. This article acts as a sense of hope that we don't have to go into a job simply for the job, but can follow our dreams and live happy lives. When looking at our futures, we see happiness as money, but for people at that stage in life, they realized happiness is doing what one loves, such as the man in the article proved.

I think that this article is very appropriate for the generation that we live in. In my generation, people are so obsessed with finding that one job where they will make millions of dollars, no matter how unhappy they will be. Hyman really defines doing what makes you happy as a career. He shows that you do not have to do the typical job in a corporation working under someone you hate. All he did was take the hobbies that he loved and made a living from them. What is better than that? Everyday he does things that are fun to him and that he enjoys and he makes money doing various different things. Although I am still determined to find that one job that will make me happy, this article made me realize that I can't lose track of what I enjoy and the hobbies that I like.

Well, this is a certainly different mood than the last article. I'd like to say that this guy really demonstrates what it is to be successful without going to college. I feel like alot of us are hearded into our own directions by our community. collegecollegecollegecollege, and we never stop to think. Granted, I'm one of those college people, but I really think that everyone, like this guy, just needs to realize what they want to do in life. Maybe it's still going to college, but its doing something entirely different than being a doctor or lawyer or whatever it is that people are doing these days. I'm really impressed with this guy'sability to live a stable life, even in such an "unstable" way of living. That's why I really respect the people who choose not to go to college, or who choose to join the army. Sure, we're heros for helping our community, but they're heros in an entirely new and impressive way.

  6. I like this article because it shows how different someone could live their life. If everyone lived their lives like this man, everyone would be so much happier. Many people get jobs purely for the money, but are miserable. Your happiness with what you do on a day to day basis is more important.

This article is really intresting yet I dont really believe he lives s comfortable lifestyle on gardening writing photogrpahy and the other four things he does. It seems like a good job doing your hobbies but I dont think you can manage a fmaily on this. I thought it was cool though to see actual people not following down the same path to a corporate job, they're actually doing somehting they want to do and love to do. I espicially like this, "You have to develop a tolerance for the setbacks that come with learning." I hate making mistakes for the most part espically in something I love to do so i would hvae to constantly remind my self that mistakes arent the end of the world like he said, hes killed more plants then all them put together.

I thought this article was very interesting. It seems very cool to actually just live out your hobbies and actually make a living out of it. However, I feel that very few people would actually build up the courage to actually drop everything and try and pursue what they love to do. There is always the risk of not making it, which isn't the case of more conventional jobs. This article shows that you don't have to always become a doctor or a lawyer or a businessman to become successful in life. Success comes with happiness, and as long as you are happy, you can consider yourself successful, and I feel like that is the point this man is trying to get across to his reader.

I thought this article was very interesting. It seems like this man is having fun and enjoying every single day instead of working. I think he was only able to achieve this by having is first job of writing for a local newspaper because I think that gave him the money to start his gardening business/hobby. But I still think that this is a very possible goal for many other Americans and might take away from the anger of many Americans like in the Arizona shooting article.

  10. I think it would be great if everyone pursued jobs based on their hobbies because if everyone was doing only what they love doing every job would executed perfectly which would in turn improve society and perhaps the economy.

  11. i find it wonderful how todays basic hobbies can benefit people in the future. A child today might be playing a videogame where is he wanted to a microscopic engineer sudden hand movements made in his video game playing days would aid him. people who also want to go into fitness and body training, would today most likely be riding a bike or runnning. I wonder what i am doing today, may help in the future become what i want to be.

I found this article very interesting and enlightening as we prepare for our life in college and begin to choose the path for the rest of our lives. This man, although he had tried many different jobs, found happiness and comfort in the various activities that he likes to do the most. I admire him very much in terms of his willingness to do what he wants to do rather than being pressured by the rest of soceityn in doing a job where he is not able to express his own personality. I really like the advice he gave at the end, which proves very true for us, saying that whatever you go through, you use those things as mistakes and learn from the and base the rest of your life on those experiences

  13. This is probably one of the best articles I've read. This man is a genius. Yeah, many people probably wouldn't want to do this, but it doesn't seem like such a bad idea. Especially for people like me, who don't know what they want to do in the future. I've always wanted to travel the world, and experience different things the world has to offer. Doing something you love or even things that you love for a living is probably the best thing ever. Who knows, maybe I'll end up making a living out of my hobbies.

    ReplyDelete
  14. That is a very interesting idea. It sounds like a lot of fun to do what you want and what you love. I know what I want to do, but it can never hurt to keep ones options open. It sounds like he has a good time working, particularly in the garden because he said he felt like he was playing.

  15. I think this article is a great insight for all high school students, especially seniors. So many people when deciding on what they want to be in the future, focus on how much money they can make rather than what they enjoy to do. I feel that if people go into college with that mind set, they soon will become bored with their life. I feel that you should find something that makes you happy, and then take that passion and find a job with it, so you can pay your bills.

This article was pretty interesting. It's cool how he hasn't had a regular job since 1992 but everyday he gets to do what he loves with gardening, photography, sculpting, and writing. It's also nice that he knows he enjoys all of these hobbies and had the ability to persue them, but I feel this lifestyle isn't for everyone. I'm not sure if I'd be okay with not having a stable income and job, but I'd try living like this if I could one day and persue my hobbies.

  17. I thought this article was really interesting. I liked how Frank Hyman was able to do everything he ever wanted to as a teenager and young adult and make a career out of it now. He mentioned that he feels like he hasn't even been working because he really loved what he's doing. He is working with his hobbies and for him that isn't really work. This makes me realize that I can make a living off doing something I enjoy and I hope I find a career that I love so it doesn't always feel like work.

After reading this article, I began to realize that I have no idea what i want to do in my life. This man is extremely lucky to enjoy what he does and make a living off of it. I have been inspired to explore my own hobbies and skills that i may establish as my own career in the future.

  20. This article on a man who is paid for doing his hobbies, which is amazing in itself considering that it usually isn't easy to be paid for something like that. His various jobs ranging from writing to gardening is something that I find amazing because it proves that there isn't just one job alone that a person needs to pursue to make a living and how diverse careers and jobs can really be. I think that it's great that someone can live off being paid for his hobbies, but I also think that if you find a job you love, it is one in the same and as long as you're enjoying what you do, you've done something incredible.

I really enjoyed this article. It is a good thing to read if you are a person with great ambitions. Also with college around the corner it shows options as apposed to being a doctor or a teacher, etc. I also like that the author talks about set backs and how it can fail, but any career can fail really especailly today with unemployment so high. If you are determined and are doing what you love then everything should fall into place and work out.

After reading this article, I have learned that choosing a career isn't just based on the salary you can make, but on your happiness too. Now that I have read an article on careers I really have no clue what profession will best suit me, however I have been inspired to explore my hobbies and skills to find a right career for the future.

  23. Being paid to do your hobbies sounds like an amazing job; the thing is, it can be! I have no clue what I want to do with my life right now and I was struggling for a bit, but now that I read this article, I realize that I can use my hobbies to make a good living off of. With any luck, I could end up like that man and enjoy life doing what I love best all while earning at least a decent income from it.

  24. Growing up I always heard you shouldn’t make your hobbies into a career because it just takes the fun out of it (unless your hobby is doing math problems because that’s already boring). Also, many people like me have artistic hobbies, and as they say there’s no money in that. And what does everyone want: MONEY! This guy must be lucky to be of the few that were able to make their hobby into a career. He hops around getting paid for different little projects he does. But for me, I’m okay with not being paid for my paintings or to dance. I’m okay with say being a psychiatrist who paints in her spare time and even offers art therapy. Everyone likes something, your career doesn’t have to be your favorite but it should be something you like.

  25. This article got me thinking about my future. A person's success and comfort in life isn't just based on school and degrees. Just as Frank Hyman is living in the recession through his hobbies or "callings," the same can apply to anyone else. However, I think that the reason why most people stick with the norm and go to school for degrees is because of the risk involved. Hyman even said so himself that only 9 percent of the people who do work in this way make some money. 1 percent or less of the people can actually make a decent living like this. This risk is what I think restricts people from taking risks in today's modern world.

  26. After I read this article, I think that it is true that we find jobs we are interested. I think this man are living in his life. When it comes to my finding my job I will choice a job that are similar to hobbies, to enjoy my life. If I didn't find a job I love, I will most likely find a new one until I find one I love the most.

  27. I think this article is very encouraging for all people. In today's day in age, most people are unhappy with their careers and only continue with them because of their sallery. but, this man is willing to sacrifice making a lot of money, for doing things he loves. I think our world has become very materialistic, and this man is on to something we should all try to encorporate in our lives, finding hobbies and activities that bring us happiness.~Emily E period 6

  28. You know this article really broadens one's mind to a whole new future. This man didn't go to college, and lived his life with his hobbies. Honestly, is there anyone that we know of that had ever done this? I don't know one single person that had done this because my life has been filled with persistence from my family to go to college, get a degree, have a successful career and so on. This man is my role-model, being able to follow his heart and all. This is what we, as people, forget these day, to follow what we really want to go for. Nowadays people are obsessed with getting a load of money and aim for that in the future. Sure, having a lot of money would be nice, but doing what you love is what makes you happy and that's having a successful future, being happy. This 26 year old dropout knew what he wanted to do in his life and he went for it. He made a living from everything that he loved and still loves to do. He's 50 and living a good life. That is truly incredible.

This man is the epitome of a new standard of self-satisfaction. He is able to benefit himself while learning new and interesting things doing it. He was able to take three complete different fields he was interested in and partake in them, just doing the things he liked. He sculpted, gardened, wrote, helped out with community service, and was elected to city council. If everyone were to act smart and be like him, there will be less depression and suicide attempts from a bad work day.

  30. I think that being paid for your hobbies is wonderful because many high school students are really worrying and stressing about having a profession that can just bring us a lot of money. I know some people in my grade who really want to be a doctor because of how much money doctors usually make, but reading this article right now as a sophomore is a good idea because it gives us time to really think about what we really should do as work in our lives. This article is also inspiring and instructive to us to do what we really love doing before we become miserable doing something that we truly don't have an interest in.

  33. Compared to the other stories, this was not too interesting for me because when he says the "90%" rule, he is that less than 1% of the people that was this successful after dropping out and creating a business. Especially today, it is much harder to create a business in this economy and people should not look up to him and say maybe they should drop out too and start a business or something. It is nice how he was determined enough to go on like this but I doubt if he had this talent that this was his best route.

  36. Honestly I LOVE this article because it reflects me 100000x. I have so many passions, yet like that person, passions that individually aren't strong enough to develop one career; i simply aim to do all of them.
im passionate about art, yes, but also strong interests that many probaly won't know about... like food presentation and nutrition and traveling, ..writing, especially creative writing, choreographing dances, acting. I think it's important that people go about their lives doing what they LIKE to do. or else it's a huge waste in talent, and in passion. Everyone has just one life, so why not just give it your all?
This truly proves that sticking strongly for what you love never fails; for example, this guy got his pictures published in a National Magazine just by doing what he does best! What if life was like this...

  37. I thought this article was pretty cool. The writer has taken all his passions in life such as gardening and photography, and turned them into a career. I really liked the line: "Mistakes are just a message to try again but in a different way, and failures are a one-room schoolhouse for the adventurous." He truly follows his dreams, and never gives up. Also, he seems to really love what he does for a living which is awesome since it's tough for many people to find jobs they truly love.

  38. I liked this article because this guy who didn't want a career found an alternative to it. Instead of just staying at home and his wife making all the money he found a way to make money on his hobbies. The only problem with that is that you have to be good at all those hobbies to make a decent living. Foe those people who want to be rich that will not work but for someone who just wants to enjoy life and do what he likes this is perfect for you

  39. After reading this article, i really like the mindset this man has in life. He found work doing things he enjoyed doing and that is what i feel a real job is. 40. As children, we are taught by our parents to go to school, gain an education, and eventually get a prestigious occupation that will entail us millions of dollars. To a certain extent, our parents are right because we do money in order to live. However, there's always a chance that, with the high income paying jobs we end up having, we are not happy. That should not be the case, though. It may be easier said than done, but I think it is important for us, especially since we are "the future," to find jobs that we will enjoy doing. Our job, just like the man in the article, should just be that: a hobby.

  41. i found this article very interesting in that it showed me that sometimes the career your parents choose for you that you really do not want to do is not always the way to a successful life. This article showed me that doing something that you truly love doing like hunting to building things is a hobby that can get you far in life and i feel this article is telling us that if you love doing something you should pursue it because you never know where that might lead you

  42. Having a hobby that terns into the way that your money is one of the best ways to live your life. Enjoying what you do and being able to do it will never make you want to retire. Unfortunately this can not be the case for every one. Most people will have to get stuck with doing the “normal” job. While they can still have a hobby they will not be able to live off it let alone make money. This guy is extremely lucky being able to do what he does best and get paid for it.

  43. Reading this article, two words come to mind, perseverance, and success. Being a College drop-out, odds are against you, and his level of perseverance is what carried him through to success. However, an outcome such as this is most unlikely, he just happened to be particularly skilled in his 'hobbies' because if this was the other 90 percent that he mentions, they would crash and burn. I also agree with him when he says "You also have to take ownership of your education" however it is ironic coming from a College drop-out himself.

  44. Being a sophomore in high school- with two years to go till college, I have started seriously thinking about my profession and what all I want to accomplish in my lifetime. I realize that one needs money to survive in this materialistic world, however this article has showed to me (and probably many others) that if you work hard enough, what you love can become what you do for all your life. Going against what I just said though- not everyone is that lucky as the man talked about in the article or as Bill Gates. Both were drop outs who pursued their dream and succeeded- many fail not becuase they did not try hard enough but luck wasn't by their side. This article has only left me more to think about.

This article showed several different things, it shows how if you put your mind to something and work harder then anyone else, something you enjoy doing can be your proffession for a lifetime. This is very inspirational because it shows from going nothing to something, being a college dropout is never easy, but he defied everyone's theories and managed to do the impossible.
